Yeah not entirely sure on how others do it either. Other then just putting 2 fish of opposite genders together and crossing your fingers. Lol I'd like to get into hybridizing too it's just last thing I want is to get stuck with a fish that refuses to breed with anything I got.
im getting the hang of breeding them, ive got a few pairs producing fry on the regular.what i found works is higher temps, frequent water changes and for them to be the only fish in the tank.i guess ive never actually attempted to crossbreed anything.now real question is do i take the f1 red texas i get from these 2 and breed them back into the male gt or female midevil?

I would say it depends on the traits you wanting to strengthen. You could also breed siblings together atleast til f2-f3 before breeding back into the parents. Which ever parent you choose will strengthen that side of the Gene pool. Personally I would focus on pearling first. Granted if your going more for the red coloration I would go with the midevil to help strengthen the overall color of the fish and focus on pearling later.

yea thats what im thinking and if i get a nice red dragon flowerhorn from my fry i'll use that give it that kok and a more red coloration, possibly a red eye

Lol yeah some fish are just stubborn. I currently got my male 5in convict in with my 7in female FH and she would more then gladly kill him if she could fit in his vase. Lol granted he don't help his situation any when all he does is swims over to her ram her in the side and quickly retreat back to the vase for safety. Granted only reason I got him in with her is because he will bully/kill anything smaller then himself.

my two flowerhorns might as well be goldfish..as friendly as they are with each other.this second batch of fry with midevil pair ive noticed the female is waaay more into the parenting aspect, first batch she just wanted to leave lol and the male would beat her if she tried to.then ive got these 2 gold saums together in a tank, male is really into the female and shes like meh i guess u can hang around me..he chose her wanted nothing to do with the other 2 females

was reading that the females of a lot of these ca species specifically seek out crazy aggressive males on purpose to pair with for the sake of the fry and will risk death to attempt to pair up lol.thats quite the commitment

Haha yeah might be what's going on with my big female. Poor lokir, spent so long with out a mate and now that he's got one she don't wanna smash. Might try pairing him with my small female since he'll be an inch longer but not certain I want him returning to his bully personality. Btw these are the 2 female FH's I have atm. They may not look like it but they are bother sisters from the same batch of fry. They are both ⅔ red dragon and ⅓ fader.

Lol not sure what she would be called. All I know was she was one of the runts and ended up being an odd ball out of the whole batch. These 2 were their parents. The father was very aggressive, atleast to me he was, always drew blood anytime I had to clean the tank. The mother was ½fader.
