Vieja Zonatum: SPAWNage ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would remove it till the next time they spawn, so your female will have more space to get away from the male if she has to. The male will most likely wanna go again before the female is ready, causing him to harass her.

updates from this pair? WHere were the fish obtained from? Beautiful fish! and thick too!

Thanks!

They did lay again, but they got eaten again.... They've remained calm and not in spawning mode for about a month or so...

I got them from a lfs here in San Antonio.. they were labeled as Synspilum.. I picked those fish not knowing they were M and F... And I think they were way to small to even give it a good guess at the time..

Nice looking pair.
In my experince with spawning these when they go into spawning mode i do large 80% water changes(twice several days apart)you dont really need to cool the water to much, the new water will trigger them fine, and the larger water changes will get the female ready sooner and she will lay larger spawns, also freeze dried earthworms and krill will condition them to have large spawns(feed when they go into spawning mode)you will be surprised the size of spawns they can have.

Those are great fish , I bought 4 small ones a while back and they are growing and starting to get very aggressive even though they are much smaller than my other cichlids. I picked out the the biggest most colorful one hoping it is a male and I am going to rehome the other 3. I could not even imagine the aggresion from these guys if they ever spawn in my tank lol

Thanks, jweav!

And thanks to you too Budda! Good advice..

Thank you Redfish! The aggression gets really bad.. the other fish are not happy once these two get into baby making time.. GL with yours.

^^Their pretty calm.. actually very calm.. they stay to themselves really. Everyone has thier fins right now which says a lot.

That is good to know my biggest one keeps to himself mostly but is very active and fun to watch, thats why I want to keep him , the other 3 smaller ones are the trouble makers lol. They seem to gang up on my larger cichlids especially my 6" jaguar but he holds his own, they aggrivate him more than anything.
