Why should a thread like this be closed? What would be the reason for it to be closed?

What photos are you basing that on? I'm not trying to be critical, honestly.

From what I've seen there are no photos of fully mature Vonts against which to compare Escons & Chairels (which I consider pretty much the same fish).

The variability of any species, not just this one, requires a fair number of fish to be compared before any generalizations can be made, and in this case we've got ZERO photos of adult Vonts so far.

I'm not basing it on any photos. I have the Vont and i've also had the Escondidos and the Vonts patterning is more bold in my opinion.

Regarding the pic I posted in my buy and sell thread yesterday it was 1 of several I recieved from DC before and during his trip to Columbia. I posted the pic, reverse asked what it was and I stated F0 vontehillo carpentis as that is what I was told they were. Obviously they are not I accept responsibility for this mistake and appolgise for this mistake it was not intentional and I'll try to make as few as possible in the future. As far as being deceptive that was not my intention all the wild adults have been sold only a few F1s remain and they are all pending shipment. I never offered the fish in the pic for sale or claimed they were my fish. I did not rush to respond to this thread because I wanted to speak with Don and get the facts before posting anything. I will attach an e-mail he sent me earlier. As far as avoiding issues or not responding....I spend much days and evenings with my dad who has been hospitalized with pneumonia since 2/510-2/18/10 and is now in a rehabilitation facility regaining his strength to return home...my family is my priority I cant find time for taking care of fish some days and responding to threads is not a priority right now. Vontehillo may mean the world to some people on this forum who make it a 24/7 issue but they are just some little fish in my tanks and nothing more, I've never made a big deal about them. So while I will answer any question you should pm me or better yet call me as i will not be back on this thread.
Ira,
I just researched the properties of this image of the group photo. This particular pic is not mine but from a customer of mine in South East Asia taken several years ago. They are Panuco carpintis, not Vontehillo. I apologize for any problem or inconvenience this might have caused you. Please find attached photo’s I took of species Vontehillo about 4 months ago. The hand held was taken at the lagoon directly after capture. The difference in populations is obvious.
Thanks,
Don

How big are your vonts? And the escons? I'd be interested to know if one or the other looks better as juveniles and then see how that carries over (or doesn't) into adulthood.

Keep in mind, some of us don't believe that all of these races even exist. Just because they come from slightly different areas does not mean the limited number of fish collected in each location is a "type" species for that location. I feel certain that if enough fish were collected, of any species from similarly proximate locations, you'd see a wide range of visual characteristics. So, any unique characteristics you see are, IMO, unique to the specific breeders that were collected. The fewer collected, the shallower the gene pool when the fish come to market.

That's not to say that a collector didn't happen to choose a particularly well colored pair to start his captive strain with though.

Still, disappointed we don't have more large fish of this Vontehillo type (whether it's a race, new species, or just your everyday carp). That the photos appear to be bogus isn't helping clarify things.

Makes sense Ira. Sounds like you got hung out to dry by your vendor (and I don't believe his story one bit; like he mixed up a several year old photo that someone in Asia took with photos of a recently collected species). Too bad you took the heat when he deserved it. I'd be very angry if I were you.

It seems he mislead you when he granted you "exclusive" distribution rights too. As you recently verified, he did sell some to a LFS in my area also.

If he has any pictures of adults that would be a nice thing to see. The fish in the new photo is impressive, but I'm sure a fully grown fish would be even better! Best of luck to you and your family.
