No problem. Your fish are not jurupari or any satanoperca species. Sorry, I cannot help you ID them. So many geo variants and they all look similar when they are young.

i KNEW they werent any Satanoperca Juri.. i m callin em Geo surinamensis until somebody knows for sure what they are...Thanks to everybody!

At first I thought perhaps altifrons, given their wide range and many different-looking "morphs". But the lateral spot looks a little too large - if they grow out some and lose it then altifrons is the best bet. A tail photo will clear up if it is one of the Tapajos Red-heads. G. abalios may be a good guess but I've not seen many pics of them to know one way or the other. Can anyone point me in a direction to see some confirmed photos of abalios (i.e. not Fishbase)?

G. surinamensis is rare in the hobby mainly due to just about no exporting from the collection location. That doesn't mean they aren't in the hobby, just possibly misidentified or sold as just "geos". Any way we split it, we'll have to wait a while to get an exact ID for these pics. :)

You are right, they are not being exported these days. My guess would be geo proximus, since that is what is usually sold to lfs as geo surinamensis.

After looking at this link let me know if you agree?

i checked it out.. they look similar but so do most geophagus... mine has blue lines down the body those are yellowish gold, but who knows the juvies may change to look like that... also mine has spots not stripes on its tail markings, but like i said they could have changed... thanks for the post.

Thanks for the link - a shot of the tails of these fish in this thread would clarify, but they didn't appear to be striped as these G. abalios are.

I think, ultimately, we will have to wait to see. Isn't that half the fun!

Haha it is.. I have one super aggressive specimen, and 2 others, one female i think and one other male... the one i think is female is yellowish with blue lines, the other ones are more of an irradescent green pattern with orange... i may just be seeing things...
