Doubt you will ever come across a true surinamensis any time soon.

My colony were sold to me as suri's too, but i know there are heaps of geo's under that name. Surinamensis has almost become a common name for a lot of geo's. They have started to seperate them and give them their own scientific names.... like mine Geophagus Brachybranchus previously known as "Black throat surinamensis".

Have a read of the link below...

I forgot... My money is on Geophagus Pintare

When its 3-4" take some photo's without the flash and you'll get an ID

I have a 3" + Geo right now and the others are like 2.5".. i cant take a picture without the flash, ive tried but the damn camera is too old and it is "picture is blurry would you like to delete" every time i try. my 21st bday is in 3 weeks and im getting a Kodak P880 i think.. Ill try and get some more pics...

Surinamensis are not currently on the market. Any fish labled as such and none of the fish posted on this thread are surinamensis.

To the OP. You are going to have to grow your fish out a good bit before you have much of a chance of IDing them. There are tons of Geophagus that look like that when small and even as adults it is going to be very difficult to know for sure what they are in some cases. You also almost certainly have more then one type if they came from different stores. If you know that some were bred locally you should be able to find the breeder and get a correct ID on that one. Most likely the ones you bought from different stores were collected in columbia.

I don't know what the OP has/had - hopefully it's a lot bigger now since it has been TWO YEARS.

But what you have is not a G. surinamensis. According to Hernán López-Fernández, adult G. surinamensis only has three lateral bars, with the third one being incomplete and ends in the mid-lateral spot.

Like JD said it's extremely rare to see G. surinamensis in the hobby now, since there has been no collection in and export from that area for ages.

That's definitely not a G. surinamensis complex species. Appears to be a Geophagus abalios.

Fish pictured in the original post is too small to identify.
