I actually got my green spotted puffer at wal-mart. 4.75!
mine has most of your typical crap but some occasional interesting stuff. They had a decal on the tanks for a ropefish (labelled as dinosaur eel) but didnt have it, im waiting for that one to show up.

walmart at home just started selling better fish... puffers, oscars, rams, tin foils, channel cats, Africans and much more... used to just sell mollies and stuff like that

I know at my local wally world the trick is to get there fairly soon after they get a shipment. if you get there within a week or so you can get decent fish at a great price. Much later the tanks are full of half dead fish.
I just picked up a lace synodontis cat today for $3.84!:headbang2

Tonight, after going to the bar with a friend and having a couple drinks, I headed over to Wal-Mart to pick up a couple things. I always check out the fish section, but rarely ever buy anything. For the most part, this particular Wal-Mart always carries nearly the same selection of fish as the local fish stores (same distributor). I was looking, and didn't see anything too special.

I did notice in the tank with the label of Jack Dempseys, plecos, and giant danios, there was a white cichlid with a couple dark spots on him that had a whole bunch of fin damage. It was a little bigger than the rest of the fish, but did not look good at all. I asked the person what type of fish it was, and they told me it was a Jack Dempsey (it obviously is not). Since Jack's are like $2 and change, I decided to go ahead and get it because I have an open 20 now.

So I brought it home, introduced him to his new tank, and within an hour, he was devouring bloodworms. I'm thinking he's a Red Devil, but I don't know for sure. All I know is, I got a really cool looking fish from Wal-Mart for cheap, and he probably would have died soon if I wouldn't have gotten him.

Been there done that. after six months of buying fish at wal-mart and six months of fish dying. I stopped buying them there and my fish starting living.
