not to hijack the thread, but can one oscar live in a 55 gallon by itself for life?
Some believe that they can but I say no. A 75 should be bare minimum for a fish of their potential adult size. I would go larger personally. But this is just my opinion.

take the fish back to walmart and get 10 guppies if not then do what your on this forum to do and be a MONSTER FISH KEEPER and get a BIGGER TANK like at least 10x bigger than the one you have. if not then return the fish then do research on what fish is most suitable for the filtration you have and the size tank you are housing the fish in

I have to admit Walmart has some of the best baby oscars around. They put alot of the LFS to shame.

If you want to know the honest truth about having 2 Oscars in a 10 gallon tank,it is possible to do for a whole year,BUT they will get hole in the head disease as soon as they reach about 5+ inches from water quality being very bad from all the waste they produce. You were better off getting for a 100 dollars a 55 gallon fish tank kit that will give at least 2 Oscars room to grow out of,until you got them at least a 100 plus gallon fish tank.

I say at least get a 55 gallon for a while. then upgrade to maybe 120. Oscars are very active and like to roam around. A 10 gallon is big enough for like 7 guppies... If you keep those fish in their they will surly die. These guys also eat a ton! My 4" Oscars are eating the same as my 9" Dempsey. Also if you don't know about these fish why would you buy? Train on some guppies please. Even Goldfish will outgrow a 10 gallon.

Yes lol. A lot of people here stress that Oscars need to be kept in 75 gallons minimum. I don't think so. The bigger the better but a 55 gallon will be able to house them for life. As long as you have adequate filtration and do water changes regularly then it shouldn't be a problem.
