Want to start a small reptile setup any suggestions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
beardeds complicated? how? they require heat, so do leos. they require food, so do leos, they require uv, so do leos (i know some will argue otherwise but i think its benefical for even nocturnal species).

beardies are a BITmore complicated than leos due to the uv lighting, cost of lighting and food, basking temps, amount and size of food, size of enclosure, humidity levels..etc. you really can't say leo care is the same as beardie care. both are great beginner reptile and easy to care for, but beardies require more..they are easy, but a bit more complicated.

IMO uv light is useless for leos..but im not getting into that argument.

hah well i would prolly sway towards the leo just cuz it sounds easier and i always liked geckos. not to big of a fan of beardies. i just see em everywear where i live. but should i get a 20L or 40L and is there a lot of equipment to buy for thwe leos?

Out of the leos that I have had, only one hide a lot.

i personally do not like leos, all they do is sleep, poop, and barley eat....
but thats why they are for beginners lol

Leos do not require UV.

what about crested geckos? they are pretty easy but leos i think are easier but make sure not to have sand or anything like that use paper or a towel as bedding

cresteds are easy they just have a special diet and sometimes get floppy tail but coco fiber works as substrate great but they need a tall tank since they are arbs.

but yeah uvb isnt needed at all for leos but in ways i could see it beeing beneficial if u have a weird one that basks or something

we should wait till we find out what size tank it is before we start rambling tho

If you just get a single leo, anything 10 gallons and up is big enough. Get the biggest tank you have room for and you can have more leos (females are generally fine together, but males will fight, so you can only have up to one male per group). And no, there is very little equipment leos really require. You'll need a heat source-I'd recommend an under tank heating pad as leos don't really like light, and the heat directly on their underside helps with digestion. You'll also need a couple hides so the leo can have a warm hide and a cooler hide to regulate its body temp (also, you need to make one a moist hide by putting some damp moss or paper towels inside to help with shedding). Leos will also often drink from a water bowl, so it's a good idea to have a water bowl and also a small calcium bowl. Other than that, I guess there's a thermometer which is always a good idea to have with herps.

As far as the sand issue, you'll get a lot of people on both sides. I wouldn't recommend it for babies just to be safe, but I think it's perfectly safe to keep adults on fine sand. Either way, paper towels are also a good, cheap substrate...
