To be honest, my man.. I don’t think it’ll turn out like these ones either.. I don’t mean to dishearten you but I just hoped you’d be able to choose better next time and not give a chance for the seller to fool you.. but most importantly, you like what you got.. a fish is a fish at the end of the day, all of them have a life and all of them deserve to be taken care of properly once you’ve taken responsibility by bringing it home. Good luck :)

Thanks, mind if I ask how you can tell at this size? It’s barely over an inch. From my experience with peacocks and haps, it’s too small to tell, but it sounds like it’s different with FH
I’m definitely keeping this one, it’s got a nice attitude already, the other was and still is skittish, this guy nips my hands when I clean the tank

I am not good at all at guessing how flowerhorn will turn out. Looks like this one is heavy on tri mac side as well. If you can see pearls on your fish but wasn't captured in the video then he will get good pearls as an adult. You will have to wait a few days.

Also decide first what you want then get a fish. It's not a good idea to rehome the fish when it grows up. I am saying this because you rehome your previous fish and then got another one from same line. Higher grade flowerhorn needs to have a lot of quantities like body shape, nice fins, big kok, color, pearls etc. Anything lacking in one or more is considered low grade but that's a perspective. I wanted a fish with everything except massive kok. I tried selecting by that on 3 inch long fish.

This forum has few very experienced rational people, follow there advice.

Sure, I’ll try explaining :)
It’s really hard to figure out how a fry will turn out as an adult, they keep changing colours and pattern till they are a MATURE adult.. but there are some qualities you may look for to have an increased chance of it turning out to have all standard qualities of a flowerhorn, like a big kok, fins and tails being held straight up or erect, pearl scales, body shape, the black irregular horizontal stripe etc. I will attach a picture for your reference:) this one is around an inch and I’m about to import ten of these little fellas from Thailand next week.

An experienced FH breeder, can begin to select high grade fish at very small fishes, even under an inch. The same applies to vendors/importers/exporters that deal with juvenile FH on a regular basis.

He doesn’t really have pearling, it’s more like speckles. It’s not from the same line as the other, two different sellers. I ended up keeping the other one too,my daughter is attached to it, but rehoming a fish is easy for me since I know lots of people in the hobby. Thanks for the tips!

That looks great, so I guess you really can tell when they’re small, that’s definitely better looking than mine
Thanks for the info!

By speckle you mean small shiny spots then they will develop in to larger pearls.

Oh ok, yeah they look like tiny shiny spots. Mostly along the bottom and side of his body behind where the pink is to the anal fin and about half way up the side of the body. I can only see them from certain angles tho
