As someone who works at a chain pet store, we move fish fast. Oscars, no matter the size, don't stay in the store more than a few weeks. They also have considerably better survival rates that most of the other fish we keep. You should definitely leave him there for someone who has a proper set up, he'll do much better that way.
That was really harsh...at least he came to ask advise unlike some that come on here AFTER they already purchased the fish to ask the question. I would not do it because your don't have the proper tank to home him in. Most of us have that kindness in us to take care of something when we see it sick, especially in our hobby. This can sometimes lead to more harm than good and in this case, I would leave him there to hopefully find a home that can house him for life.
gotta love the keyboard warriors!!! ahahahah! from england too huh?! well "mate" if i am one of those "people" then there's no explanation for the abnormality that am i here asking first before buying. but hey, that's what i get for tryign to help an innocent animal. and no, th tank he was in is about 5 gallons. mine is 29., 6 tiems that former size. so how can my buying him and offering a tank that much larger be an issue, although i see the angle you're coming from.
thanks and i agree. i just felt genuine pity for the fish. the other replies in this thread are pretty cold too, but hey, that's the arctic of the internet where trolls roam and keyboard warriros run amok.
Gonna elaborate on my Absolutely Not. I've got a 180G Oscar community tank. 2 Os over 10" Excellent water conditions. And I wouldn't take him. A few of the reasons. If he's got HITH to the Bone as you described then he comes from somewhere that really treated him poorly. Second my Os are too important to me to risk bringing in any type of disease from this fish. Third I went and measured my 29G bowfront it's 1' in the center and 10" on the ends. That indicates to me that the Oscar you have described would have to be in the very center of the tank to turn around without touching the glass. I just couldn't see doing that to a fish for more then a few days in extreme situations.
As to your update about him being in a 5 gallon tank at your LFS. Well, that my friend brings me to another question. Why would you shop their?
And please, Read the conext of this message as purely informational. I am in no way trying to be juraggotory or uppity. But we all know how Text on a PC screen can come of with emotion as a person reads it to themself.
no like stated above someone else will eventually come get him and put him in a bigger tank then what you have wait untill you can get a bigger tank for him where are you located?
honestly dont do it, there no point in wasting your money and have the fish die two day after bringing it home your not saving anything when u bring a fish that basically D.O.A home. There are plenty of other fish that can fit in a 29 but Oscar aren't one of them
Of coarse, there is also the possibility that some one buys it and puts it in a tank smaller than a 29. I know LFS need to make money to stay in business, but I think some of them should care a bit more about the home some of these fish are going to, especially the monster breeds.
