Water change disaster?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He’s still breathing weirdly but acting like himself again
Sorry for the late reply mate, I would try not to worry to much he won't be happy with the situation and maybe off with you for a few days but should be perfectly fine.

Just keep an eye on him make sure theres no white spot appear from the stress and when he dose eat makes sure he's not getting any clear poo as again stress can cause internal parisites to take hold. But all should be fine.

As some one previously mentioned you could just add some warm water via the kettle that would definitely speed things up a little.

He's looking good by the way ?

You shouldn't let the water drop more than 5 degrees in general for fish. FH particularly like water in the high 70s/low 80s, so for your tank, it shouldn't drop below 77F while doing a water change. You need to mix in hot water tap at the same time while filling.

Just don't go adding expensive aquarium salt. I say expensive because you can get the same results from water heater salt (sodium based), pool salt, table salt, pickling salt, and any Sodium Chloride product that is cheaper than API aquarium salt. Working at Krogers, you should be able to get pickling salt real cheap.

In addition to saving money by not buying 'Aquarium salt' , you can also save money and improve your filter 's capability by modifying the cartridges as shown below. Shown are for a Penguin or Emperor filter, but I have done the same for friends' Aqueon, Whisper, Topfin, or just about ANY cursed disposable-cartridge-using HOB. The cartridges shown are about 3 years old.
The idea is -
You cut an opening pn the original sleeve that came with the filter and save the plastic frame and the hanging cut pad; remove carbon; fill with your choice of sponge material; put in back in filter, and have a filter that will never need a cartridge replaced. You just wring it in used aquarium water once a week and voila! I treat all sponges of all kinds (HOBs and canisters) as both mechanical and biological media, just by always rinsing them in aquarium water.
