At the end of the day water changes are all down to what the owner feels happy with it's the owner who has and uses the test kit so it's only you who knows how much water to change

I couldn't change 90% even if I wanted to as it would be dam cruel having all my fish with half there body's out of the water

It's not like I keep just rays and it would stress all my other fish out having to be crammed into 4 inch of water

I just can't see why anyone would need to change more than 50% in one go sorry but that's my opinion which we are all entitled to

i agreed with you.... whoever feels that is appropriat.. go ahead... :) :)

Complete FAIL.
maybe this attitude is why Discus imported from Malaysia always come with so many nasty bacterial diseases

i agreed with you about the fish quality... so does my stocks...... but from my case and every others is completely different.. we have different water source and also parameters. so it is very subjective for this matter...

That's a lot of very useful information!

Based on my time and budget limitations I have decided to do a 20% WC once every 2 weeks. So far my rays are happy and eating well.

One thing I have learned is that Motoro's can eat endlessly. They are for sure "river monsters"! lol I think that's going to be the next major expense.

"More water changes for underfiltered tanks"... what the f is that? The first rule when it comes to fish keeping is to have a well adapted -and well functioning filter system. Ammonia and nitrite doesent build up unless you dont have a well functioning filter system...

If your reasons for waterchanges is to get rid of constant buildups of ammonia and nitrite, and you are convinced that this is an ok situation - you ned to read up.

I do a 25% 2x a week

Perfect your rays will do great with that

People do water changes to remove nitrates nothing more if you are doing them to remove anything else then you have other problems you need to sort out

If you system is producing nitrates that's a good sigh that your system is working well and going throw the cycle

Rays can live happy and breed in fairly high nitrate so it's not that much of a problem like it is with some other fish

Rays also like the water change as 25-30% twice per week and I have even had rays breed as I have been adding the fresh water

I still feel one big water change of 90% one a week can be stressful for the and could be dangerous for 1 you mus have to shut down your filters or they would run dry

This is just my opinion but if 90% of your tank water is bad and needs changing in one go that can't be good

I do a 75% water change every 5 days or so and my rays are doing great. I make sure I'm keeping the pH, temperature, and hardness about the same and I've had no problems. I agree with keepinfish, rays are not as delicate as most people think. As long as they're acclimated properly, fed enough quality foods, and have good water they are pretty resilient.

T1, apparently you have a comprehension problem - and you don't know everything. Nitrate is NOT the only thing removed by water changes.

When did I say 90% of my water was bad? Go back, check all of my posts. I didn't. You assume, because if you don't assume you have nothing to argue against.

Of course I turn off the filters when I change water - why not? The question there is rhetorical. I turn off my filters in my non-ray tanks when I feed my fish - are you going to try to claim this is wrong too?

My rays could give a crap that I change 90% of their water. It's no more stressful than changing 25%, takes barely any more time and costs a couple pennies. Get over it. I simply answered the original question with factual information based on my own experience.

It's beyond belief that I can tell you what I do and that it doesn't upset my fish and that I've been doing it this way for years and you come along on your high horse and just say "nope, not possible, clearly there's something wrong with you, your filters, your fish and everything else".

I have success my way, you have success your way. I'm happy to leave it there but apparently your view is it's your way or the wrong way. Here's a clue: you're not omniscient.
