how do you get the syphon started with a long pool hose from the tank to the yard? and any one have a link on how to make this set up?
the python does waste a lot of water when draining.
thanks
I bought 2x1" 90º, 1" ball valve and som 1" pipe and glued it together. The pool hose fits onto the 1" pvc but I had to warm it in some boiling water to soften it up.
To start the siphon, stretch the hose out and place the pvc assembly into the tank. Go the the other end and suck. Yes, you must place your lips on the end and suck. The long length of the hose wont allow you to get water in your mouth. If sucking the hose to start the siphon grosses you out, you can put a submersible pump into the tank and pump the water out.
Having the pvc assembly in the tank, it is easy to determine excactly how much water is removed by assertaining first how much you want to remove. Then, measure from the top down. LxWxHx7.48 will give you gallons removed. So, if for example, you removed 12" of water(12" down tube) in a tank measuring 2'x2'x7' you have removed 100gallons...50% +/-.
The siphon will stop at the end of the pipe automatically.
Granted this is a very simple and somewhat ghetto way of changing water in an aquarium, but I'm accomplishing two things.
1. 75% water change(150g) in a 210g in 15min.(that includes filling, done with a garden hose and faucet adapter)
2. Water goes on the grass. Nitrate in the water is like steroids for the grass.
