Water quality - low ph

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Alrighty, I have chemicals for PH, KH, and GH. I also have test vials and liquids. I will be testing in the near future for the water out the tap and what's in the tank currently.

I did finally get a call out to the water district and also receive a report about water composition. Some of it may be different as I now know that because the house was unused and unoccupied for such a long period of time, there is likely chemical build up in the pipes. Thus, the blue dust. I was told it was likely a large amount of chlorine built up. So... although I overdose water conditioner, I had no idea that what I was testing on top of my fill bucket was unrelated to what was settling at the bottom. Erego, I probably wrecked my weaker fish with chlorine, other contaminants, and less than preferrable ph. Lesson learned: Fill my spare drum full of water from walmart and repeat as necessary to avoid losing fish until the tap contaminants are under control.

Oh. Now that's something different. (An unoccupied house isn't good in general.) So, sounds like they mean that after everything has run for a bit, you might get normal water.

Unfortunate for your fish, but that's hard to know about in advance.

I wonder if Purigen or Chemi-Pure would help clean the water enough in the spare drum, using a water pump or powerhead to circulate the water.

I recently moved and noticed my fish not interacting. I finally got time to do a water change and test the water. My tap is coming out at 6.0. Maybe lower. I am trying to get some ph UP in the next day or two. Is there maybe something else to test for? Ammonia, chlorine, nitrite, and nitrate are all testing good. I'm using tap water conditioner I always have to remove chlorine and don't see to have a chlorine problem. My test strips are show none in the water. I added feeder fish today after a water change 6 hours earlier and about 6 died. The mollies are fine. I lost the algae eaters in another tank. The angels, gouramis, and tetras are fine in there. Please let me know if there is something else to watch for. From what I've read, high ammonia and nitrite should be bigger factors but those are in check and the ph seems to be the problem.

M MCL169 hope this helps

walmart water ftw. purigen and chemi-pure... not sure. I need to do some testing on what I got and see where things are going. I haven't had a chance to split a barrel yet neither.
