In China they will eat ANYTHING that won't eat them 1st! Dogs and cats are on the menu too!

Mate, the saying is "everything with four legs is edible except table and chair" ... another one "if it moves, it can be eaten" lol makes me wonder though, in asia things with more than four legs are also eaten.

Anything that will eat them first is also edible.

i agree with JD. some of you think its a cute little turtle, i see it as normal food for people in another country. just because you think its weird or gross, doesnt mean its wrong. the USA way isnt the only way. and besides, these soft shell turtles as sold as food in SF and Oakland's chinatowns. they are live, but when you buy them, the slaughter it on the spot.

no different from chickens really

totally agree.
but i could never get myself to eat a turtle.
i dont even eat shell fish.

I want to have a word to say about this. First of for the ones that dont know me Im a huje turtle fan and actualy keep a softshell turtle as a much beloved pet. I however have not problem (even if I dont like it a bit) that other cultures and people eat turtles and tortoises. BUT I think a few things had to change around here. First of the most pertinent issue is that the animals had to non endangered species and subjected to quotas and limits to make the harvest sustainable. The reason is simple:"if you like to eat turtles you have to keep big healty turtle populations, other wise you will be the last generation to fell the taste of their flesh". Wich corrently not happening and many turtle species are being eaten out of existence. I think the inabitants of that province should think a bit before taking a bite of what their eating. Not very far cientists are strugling to "clean a mess" caused by the fishermen(mainly by them but also due to polution and habitat distrucion). We had to get as low as 4 shangai giant soft shell turtles for China to wake up and do something about it. If yesterday harvest was lower, you guys maybe still had a chance to enjoy this guys both in the wild and at the table. Now its better, you had your bellys full yesterday but your child may not even see one alive.
Second preferably thouse animals should (like all food animals) be raised and bred in captivity in natural farms, with natural diets, wich would make all of us healtier.
And third for peat sake find a way to respect the normal ways to kill, conserve and sell the meat. Have some mersy by the animal that will full your gut. DONT bucher it wille he still is alive and find a way to to humanely kill the animal, wich pre-excludes all metods normaly used in food markets. Its not triing to mess with their culture, its not triing to be duche bag, its just plain comon sence. If you fell hurt then the animal will fell hurt. Just try to imagen the ABSOLUTE HORROR OF BEING BUCHERED ALIVE:eek: If they find a way to do that, then both the animals and human would live in a much better world

well said.
thats why i only eat farmed animals.

no wonder u guys got sars :grinno:

What about mad cow disease from farmed cows? or occasional salmonela outbreak from contaminated eggs? bird flu from poultry? farmed animals are not all that safe :naughty:

besides, sars was supposedly linked to civet cats - but your point about wild animals is taken ^^

Don't want to stir the pot but i didn't read this post before. Its great in theory, and with private farms maybe. But...there is nothing natural or humane about the practices of factory farms. The meat you buy at the store more than likely came from a conscious animal. So you can't really attack other cultures...

when i was a kid i had softshell turtle soup almost weekly....... yea kinda like chicken with alot of skin.......

I remember bout 10years back when i worked retail we came upon 2 giant softshell turtles with close 24" shells....... they were too big for the 100gallon and could use their necks to knock off the lid...... so we put up a free sign for anyone who wanted them....... for weeks no one wanted them because they were very aggressive....... then one day a asian lady walked in....... she asked me if they were free..... i said "yes" she leaves and comes back with a old man....... both started looking at the tank and started nodding their heads....... i had a bad feeling so i told them that we already sold them to someone........

i dont remember what ever happened to them.....
