Louie - since you are a rookie - let me suggest you buy a better, low stretch, low memory line. It will cast better for you. Also, try to practice casting with the correct weight lure on your spin rod, it should give you the specifications on the rod towards the butt section.

You can do fine with spin cast reels, Pflueger is by far the best. Zebco & Shakespeare are lower end reels, but they will do the job for most things. The problem is when bigger game fish take, the reels strain because they are set up in a way that pressure cocks the spool to the side a little, leaving you with a herky-jerky drag.

If you run into a situation where the reel wont take in line, just keep pressure on him and eventually the fish should come to you.

Good luck!

Thanks .
I have allways ignored the line reccomendation and used 20 lb line just in case I caught a fish close to that weight.
It has worked well and held up to some tough fighters

What is a good line you recommend ? The area Walmart has huge selection and easy enough to pick up.

Though love their rods the good Shakespeare reels even with cleaning, lube, have not lasted to long once I catch a few 8 inch plus fish that fight .

it all depends what ur fishin for ... what ur tryin to get from ur real...

spinning go plenty far on any bait as long as you have correct line, and baitcast go far as hell if you know how to use them correctly.

spincast- yuck.

I have heard that but for me I can send that lure out far with a spincast .

With a spin reel half as far as sometimes big mess as line gets tangled up in reel.

With baitcast 10 feet on a good day .
I wouldnt doubt that dont know how to use them correctly but just opted to go back to the proven though cheaper made spincast. Other wise my casting is terrible distance wise.

I use it just to catch large cichlids and other lake, canal fish. Dont actually have a specific fish I go for.

I use strong line as some of them give a good fight. Overall I keep fishing simple due to most part not familiar with different line types, etc.

However as you know if you keep it simple due to not knowing you dont catch nearly as much as guy next to you reeling in one jumbo oscar and peacock bass after another.
Thus I read the forum .

pfluegers are a good choice for that. But I would have gone with the Metalist spinning reel. Thats what would buy in ur case...

I have a Daiwa GC100 that has been a pretty good spincast reel. I bought it for my nephews/nieces to use, but I have used it a few times. It's actually fun to cast, but for serious fishing I use a spinning reel or a level-wind trolling reel.

Daiwa make some nice reels go to the nearest gander mountain and see what they got the gander mountain in my area has a great selection.

Thats your problem! Use only line and lure weights your rod and reels were made for and you can cast better! For the type of fishing you do, 8lb line should be plenty. Set the drag properly and youre good to go. A spinning or bait cast reel should NEVER be out cast by a spincasting reel.

Check the brake on your baitcast reel, if you can only go ten feet it might be too tight. I keep mine as loose as they will go, but that takes lots of practice and good thumb control! ;)

I am not familiar with drag I used to set it so fish couldnt pull line but never lost one that way. Few guys in canal by where I fish into that stuff I ignore it figured it was pro fishing mumbo jumbo .

I have tendency to ignore all that line weight lure weight to me that makes fishing a pain.
I am a simple person and not really into that but looking into it more now after reading this info.

As a whole my fishing is ugly stick rods or my mini coil rod same line for all the reels and lure weight means nothing .
The spincast reel has allowed me this luxury of ignoring stuff like this but it broke over the summer as others have due to large cichlids and fished with spin reel and worse fishing and casting ever.

Thus went with spincast should be here this week .

Thanks
