"Wet Pet" for 180g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The dovii has the potentail to get to 24"s or more, why would you put a fish in a tank that has problems turning? If the tank was 3ft wide, then yes, go for it. The op mentioned he does not want to worry about having to upgrade. This is in no way shape or form overkill.

A 3 ft. tank would not be overkill. But I don't think a 24" deep tank is at all cruel to the fish.

And where are all of these 24"+ Dovii? Typical size is topping out at 20". That gives it plenty of room to turn around, and even sit completely perpendicular to the tank.

And a fish is not ridgid. It turns kind of like a bicycle, and curls up. I am not condoning putting a fish longer than the width of the tank, but you don't need a 3 ft. deep tank for a 20" fish. It would be nice, but it's in no way necessary.

That's what they do man. Even the guys that keep them in 400 gallon+ tanks have them smashing into the glass all the time.

Which is exactly what i was told and why i decided not to stick one in a 180. I could probably fit one in there, but i don't want a fish with bruises and no teeth.

This is always a topic and always will be.......but I think the reason the majority of Dovii and Umbee on here are in the 20" max range and there are more 17" than that is because the majority keep them in to small of tanks. It's not a surprise that the two larger examples of these two species on this site are kept in very large tanks. Do I think every Dovii would get 24" no but I think there would be a lot more if they were not kept in 180 gal. for life. Not only is there length a factor but water quality and another large factor is these fish are fast powerful and need room. IMO not just enough to turn around.

OP I only keep Cichlids and if I knew I would never upgrade the tank I would go pairs, Midas, Jag, Festae......something along those lines. Or a single male Dovii or Umbee and upgrade in 3 yrs or so. The whole for life thing your talking 10 yrs plus......I think many of the fish I mentioned would love a 180 6 yrs from now......the big boys a 180 is a good grow out tank.

try game fish like bluegill, crappie, or smalllmouth bass

I appreciate everyone's responses and a lot of other similar information I have gotten elsewhere on the site. The whole debate over a dovii/umbee in a 180g is something I have read a lot of opinions on and I am still kinda stuck on what to do. When I bought the tank I wanted a Dovii bad and the tank is in my living/dining room in the middle of my house and would get a ton of attention and I thought the fish would just be awesome and into everything going on in the room. Then I got concerned that the tank would not be big enough and I postponed the fish purchase, I am currently growing out a bunch of other cichlids in it to save space on running other tanks in my basement over the winter. The fish I really want is a male Umbee and I think I am going to pull the trigger on it.

I probably won't be able to talk my wife into upgrading the main tank in our living room, but IF the fish gets to big I am sure I could set up/build some kind of pond in my basement for him. I just would perfer to keep him in the main part of the house where he will have the most attention.

Again, thanks for all of your opinions and if anyone has any young male umbee's that they are looking to part with let me know
