Wow, so many things to correct about things people have said in this thread. First off, I HIGHLY suggest watching the documentary Sharkwater as another poster mentioned. Look it up on youtube, the entire documentary is there in 9 parts. I first saw it a couple years ago when some of the producers of the documentary came and did a screening at my college.

The butyric acid that is tossed on the deck is not harmful to humans, just smells like s*** and causes discomfort to the whalers reducing the effectiveness of their whaling and therefore can not make as much money. The butyric acid also has the possibility of tainting the meat and making it unmarketable therefore reducing the money that the whalers make.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society approaches ships that are illegally fishing or whaling in sanctuaries. According to Webster Dictionary, the definition of "Sanctuary" is as follows: "2 a (1): a place of refuge and protection (2): a refuge for wildlife where predators are controlled and hunting is illegal"

The governments of countries do not do anything about illegal fishing and whaling, as illustrated in Sharkwater, because of the amount of money that it brings to those countries. The fishers pay large amounts of money to the governments to overlook their illegal activities and unfortunately the politicians are too easily consumed by greed to see what they are actually doing by overlooking the population-decimating slaughter of whales and sharks.

The poster that stated that the Steve Irwin talks to the Japanese in english and that the Japanese only speak japanese: The Steve Irwin has a Japanese citizen ship that speaks in japanese to the whalers. ALSO, I wonder how the Japanese respond to the Steve Irwin in english and be able to write these "research" posters if they only speak japanese.

I do agree that the crew should be better prepared. Some of the accidents that occur could be prevented with practice and better communication.

Next year I will be applying to volunteer to work with the Sea Shepherd. I hope to work with people or are actually out there doing something about illegal fishing.

Should take ya about a year to come up with the application fee huh????

Dont get me wrong. I hate whaling. I hate exploiting natural resources for profit.

If I could figure out how to do it I would keep whales instead of cichlids..........

oh wait arent we exploiting the fish we keep for our own pleasure.

Oh NO:naughty:

I better throw some stink bombs at my house:ROFL:

Yes, the application fee is steep, but seeing as it's going to a good cause, I see no problem spending it. If it takes you a year to make $100, then I feel bad for your fish.

And sure, you could say fish owners are exploiting fish. Many people have a false perception of sharks however, they think sharks are man-eating beasts. More people are killed by vending machines than sharks every year. Sharks are also keystone predators that keep the best competitors in check. Without the keystone predator present to keep the best competitor in check, many of the fish that people on this site enjoy keeping would be in low populations an be protected as an endangered or threatened species.

.

Did I miss something????? WTH are you talking about????

If im not mistaken we were talking about Whale Wars, The Sea Shepards, Paul Watson.

Killer vending Machines????? Keystone Predators??????

Does A.D.D. ring a bell......................

Well if all they did was write flyers and document things to submit to the government we wouldn't be discussing their actions on MFK. The thing with documentation is, how does one prove that they were at the said location? NIST traceable GPS units aren't really admisable for the purpose of maritime law. Then it becomes a question of he said she said and nothing is done. Their methods have more flair than substance but flair gets peoples attention.

To those who see these guys as echo terrorists, are you joking? If this was ALF that wouldn't be stink bombs it would be the real thing. They'd be hurling molatov cocktails and trying to buy old Russina ship killers. That's like saying the ASPCA is the same as PETA.

I didnt say write a letter, print it out and mail it......you imbecile. I meant document the facts, and present it to the governments of all the countries involved.

Seems alot more effective than ECO-Terrorism

Is this a joke?

Document the facts? Does the show not document the facts? Ever heard of the IWC? Look it up, and see what documenting the facts has done. I like how you have such a strong stance, but know nothing about the history of this.

They aren't extreme like the loose organization of ALF, or threatening human life. Terrorism is a loose term, careful how you use it.

i find it a waste of time that they do most of the things they do. the few times i have watched the show, they did the most ridiculous stuff to try to get the fishing fleets to cease. then one time they tried to tell a bunch of japanese fishermen that couldn't understand english to stop fish IN ENGLISH!

Swede, if you watched this season (I don't know about the first season), the Japanese whalers have someone that speaks english on the ship. You can hear them on a loud speaker as the Sea Shepherd crew approaches the ships in their RIBs. There is also a Japanese girl on the Steve Irwin that will get on the radio and translate for Captain Paul Watson, so needless to say, the Japanese know what is being said to them.
