What are the benefits of extra water change?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think you guys are going way overboard here. I've been in the hobby for over 25 years and have had tanks as large as 750 gallons. I never have done more than 50% water changes a week, never used any water fractioning stuff or anything fancy and all my fish have thrived. Just use common sense and don't overstock your tanks, don't overfeed like 99% of fish hobbiest do, and make sure you have a killer filtration system. It's that simple!

hey, I'm reeel simple. but duanes process is fascinating!
:D
....especially the idea of removing micro organisms, nematodes etc.

I'm not knocking it at all. When did I say that? I merely stating that the average joe keeper is not going to set up a fractioner in their house because it's too bulky, noisy and not really needed. Most of the benefits he had listed can all be taken care of with a simple in line UV light and 30-50% water change if needed. You can do whatever you want, I'm just saying all that is not needed to keep healthy fish.

depends on how your water is generally. tds, which coerelates to the above mentioned "fw protein skimmer" is where water changes can get challengeing. ime to much fluxuation in TDS more sometimes then PH can cause severe shock or death, and is often ime mistaken for ph shock. which is why regular water changes should be regular, imo a few days isnt going to make a big difference depending on a few things, stocking, feeding, additives ect. if you have a heavily stocked tank thats fed 3x a day or more it may make a big difference. the lighter the stock, the less feeding the more leway your going to have generally.

love the setup duanes. ive used similar set ups as well as algae scrubber types for nitrate/green water control for ponds before.

This is my stock for my 55.

Above is the start of the in house fractionator.
The semi clear PVC biotower is a little under 3' tall and 4"in diameter, the foam release hole is 1", reduced from a 1'5" opening. It will be interesting to see if it creates the same amount, and thick consistency foam as the outside model.
Lava rock will again to be my biomedia of choice in the tower, with a filter sock at the top.
I have not decided on the effluent hole size to the 50 gal sump yet.
Next step after effluent size, will be to hang from just below an overflow box.

thanks for the replies :) this is really interesting.
I guess always want the best for our fish :)
really interested in the fractionator

growth...health... appetite ... all will be affected. However, to much water changes are not good :)

thanks for the replies everybody :)
I skipped a water change, i Do 30% weekly wc, but due to rains and cold weather , I skipped water change for a week.
1 of my arowanas seem to have developed cloudy eye, So i immediately did water change and added some salt.
I tested for nitrate/ammonia and ph
ph is at 7.5, ammonia 0 and nitrate about 40, since i have some plants in my sump.
regular water changes are really needed though I'm still not sure what caused the cloudy eye.

Do another change if your nitrates are at 40. They should be there BEFORE you do the change, not after.

+1, I've found that even with my lack of experience, my pleco seems less affected by 2 25% water changes than 1 50% water change.

If the new water ph/temp is the same as the tank water it will not effect them. I do 50% change and may fish like the new water , in the past before I started to age the water and match temp my fish would stress during a change, now they a 50% change will stimulate my fish into breeding mood.
