What are the benefits of extra water change?

The above is dissolved organic carbon removed from my 1500 gal freshwater pond by fractionation, after mechanical, and bio filtration. And the pond is clear, and understocked.
^Ewwwww. that is so gross.
I'd never heard of the 'fractionation' process.
So, what is SeaChem Purigen's effectiveness for removing DOCs? The representation is that "Purigen® is specifically designed to be an organic scavenging resin" .

I built my fractionator from plans at koiphen.com, where he calls it "phoam phractionation.
I am in the process of building one for my tanks
There is mesh at the top for mechanical filtration

the tower is filled with lava rock for biofiltration, but any bio media would work

after bio the agitated water creates foam, that is composed of bacteria, dissolved organics, parasite cysts, algal cells, etc, the foam spills out the opening allowing polished water to return to the pond.

here are a few build shots, it is very simple

I analyzed waste in the lab and found micro-organism concentration to be between 8-10 higher per 100mL than tank water, which included and not limited to,nematodes, ciliates and many other protozoans.
I also dried, and weighed the waste and fond it 10 times heavier tha normal tank water.
the waste had to be diluted to pass thru the weighing filters

sorry if I rambled

Awesome, that's similar to a protein skimmer but for freshwater applications...One of the big aquarium filter manufacturers ought to come up with a skimmer that would work effectively in freshwater tanks.

I have always done at least a 50% ever since i started fish keeping and never had a problem I will start doing it 2 time a week at about 30%. I am running 2 marineland bio wheel 400 filters and a cascade 1200 canister filter on my 125 gallon fish tank.

I do weekly fifty percent changes on my growout tanks but on my bigger tanks I do monthly fifty percent changes.

I do 75% once a week and my fish do great with it. They show better colors and are more active after a large WC then when I don't have time and only change out 30-50%. I agree with the point that it has to be done regularly for the fish to handle it though. A 75% change after only doing 15% every 2-3 weeks will be too much for them to adapt to and can shock their systems, but once they're used to larger changes they do great with them.

I notice my fish seem to be a little more active just after a water change.

Blue Demp, you are welcome to stop anytime, just let me know.
Foam fractionation is the same as protein skimming, and it works in fresh water, the above method has worked the best for me so far, of all the methods I've tried, and is very simple.
The other method I've used successfully is the venturi type, in the pic below.

It is a bit more difficult, and the bio tower version accomplishes the extra bio and mechanical.
