What are your opinions about hybrid cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The difference there is that the species you've listed haven't caused the contamination of nearly as many species as the FH. How often do you see a fish at your lfs and debate whether it is a pure Vieja synspila or a V. synspila x discus hybrid?

I guess you could argue that issues could arrise from midevil breeding, but tbh, I would be about as likely to buy a midevil as I would to buy a FH.

Really? In my LFS, they sell Syn X Blood parrot. They look almost identical to Syns. And what do you call designer discus? A pure bred species? Heckle X Blue = Pure bred?

Tbh, You can NEVER be sure if a fish sold in LFS are "pure breeds" or hybrids. Even if there were "pure" Midas or Red Devils. How could you know? Take someones word? The only real way to know is to run DNA testing or some shiz to really figure it out.

I've seen hundreds of BP and never seen one that I could even pretend to like. You feel like a genius for owning a BP? I don't follow your line of thought.

Where'd he say anything about thinking he was a genius for owning a BP? You needa calm the hell down. If you don't like BP's fine by me, I could care less what you like, but don't bring someone down just because they like something you don't.:screwy:

blood parrots are awesome! i think you people who insult blood parrots do not know what you are talking about, they are semi aggressive cichlids that heavily vary in looks (i like my blood parrot because he is red and black, has a funny personality, and is a beautiful fish) i think most people insult blood parrots because they are "deformed" and "uninteresting", well no, just no, you have to pick out the right blood parrot with the color and shape that you like, before insulting or commenting on how you do not like blood parrots you should try raising one first, they are very interesting fish and who cares if they are not purebred, it feels good and makes you feel like a genius to introduce a new species of an animal into existence, thats my opinion

See what I bolded above. To me it reads as if raising and owning a BP makes you feel good and like a genius. Not sure why you think I'm excited about anything, you're the one who is jumping all over me. I feel bad for fish bred to be deformed and don't understand the attraction to deformed fish, but whatever. Unfortunately I highly doubt the BPs are going to be out of the hobby any time soon.

by feeling like a genius to introduce a new species of an animal into existence, clearly means it feels good to put a pair of a separate species of cichlid, that are able to hybridize, into a tank, so the pair can cross and so you can end up with an impressive cichlid hybrid with a cool or exotic color, in my opinion, people get cichlids to hybridize when they wonder what a species of cichlid would look like crossed with a different species of cichlid, they think it would be interesting to see an unusual looking cichlid that you don't see everyday, i like hybrids because they are very interesting and very different

Ask over in the Hybrid section

Going against the grain here but I like that this thread is in this section. I doubt many people would be making any decent arguments against it in a section dedicated to hybrids. I think it's healthy to ask the general cichlid population how they feel about cichlid species becoming hybrids. Post a thread in the pleco section saying pleco's suck (get it they suck?? sorry couldn't help myself) and all of the pleco guys will run to thier defense. Post that in an area not dedicated to pleco's and you will get a more varried responses.

I don't care for hybrids myself but I have a respect for anyone who cares for their fish properly. If a guy with an RTC x TSN cross shows me a tank large enough/maintenance to care for it properly, I would be supportive and less judgemental due to it being a catfish I could care less about, than cichlids I care a lot about. not really that different if you think about it...

Why doesn't the op start a poll, would be good to have more distributed answers than have one or two people voice their opinion over and over again.
I don't like hybrids much myself but what I hate most is the fact that people sell them without stating as such or think they are worth heaps because they are "new fish"

Discus are color variations of the same species, just as a black angel is still an angel, not a hybrid, and a guppy is guppy no matter how you dress it up. Crossing a Herichthys with a Vieja is crossing 1 Genus and species with another.
