WHat cichlid to breed in a 29 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah all I got is a 29 gallon to work with. I "may" be able to use a 10 gallon to raise fry if they need to be separated from parents. But yeah, looking for something that's atleast worth my time. Cons are nice, just not worth the tank space for me. Keep the suggestions rolling.

Cichlids need numerous large tanks to grow out different spawns. Unless you ship (which is a huge hassle) the LFS is your only other option. They usually dont pay much and in store credit.

Some rarer Plecos would be my reccomendation.

Electric Blue Rams may work well in that tank.

If you can get REAL Apisto Borelli, they have been hard to find lately, desirable, and easy to breed. You could even get 1M and 2F so double the fry.

I think I am gonna do rams or apistos. Kinda like the electric blue rams. But I am nervous cause I hear these fish are difficult. Anyone know anything about rams?

not CA/SA cichlids, but maybe Kribensis?

for SA cichlids, could do curviceps or rams ... maybe even firemouth ...

There are a lot of small fish you could breed in a 29 gallon, but raising fry is a different story. You're going to need another tank, at least 20 - 30 gallons, to raise a small batch of fry, and that's if you really keep up with the water changes. One of the main reasons I've slowed down with the fish breeding is because I had tons of tanks and cichlids coming out of my ears.

Sab_Fan mentioned Kribs. Though they're not CA/SA, they are a lot of fun to watch when they have fry. The male and female lead them around the tank in little herds. Rams are great, too, but need warm water and are sensitive to poor water quality, so you'll really have to stay on top of water changes.
