WHat cichlid to breed in a 29 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am looking to breed anything that has a demand and is worth breeding. In other words, is worth some money for the babies. What I have available is a 29 gallon planted tank and my water is hard and alkaline. So I worry about discus and rams because I hear they are better off in soft/acidic. This is also not a permanent home, so if a fish will outgrow it I will do the right thing and rehome them when the time comes. This is only a temporary set up. Here's the tank I will be homing the fish in:

Personally, I'd recommend giving some of the shell-dwelling african cichlids a try. There is always demand for these little guys, and they're easy to raise. Fry stay with the parents, eliminating the need for tons of extra tanks.

I agree with Fishguts talk to a local wholesaler or your LFS and see what they'll buy and for how much. Then decide if it's worth it.

just to warn you its really hard to actually make a profit breeding fish. I still like cockatoo dwarf cichlids. if you don't like those almost any of the dwarf cichlids would work. look at the apistogramma genus

yea convicts but no1 gonna buy them. I dont think u can make much. but wat about african cichlid like demonsonai sry bad spelling. IM pretty sure u can breed them and they are about 15 buck each

I think I am gonna do rams or apistos. Kinda like the electric blue rams. But I am nervous cause I hear these fish are difficult. Anyone know anything about rams?

WHy is it hard? I've made like $50-$100 each month average on a consistent level with shrimp and crayfish. Sometimes there were months I made $200-$300. I know you are not gonna get rich breeding fish. But if I could make an extra $50 a month that's good enough for me.

I like fish, I like the challenge of breeding them, and if I can make a little spare money to buy some groceries or put gas in my car I am happy with that.

But I would like to try something new. At this point I wanna use the tank space for something worth it. I could put anything in my tank but then it would be boring. I like to have hobbies where I could make money back on them rather than it turn into a money pit you often see with most people who keep fish.

I thought apistos liked soft/acidic too? Same like discus and angels right?

yeah, pretty sure that's accurate ... doesn't mean it can't be done, but soft/acidic would be the preferred conditions ...

hard water might suit CA cichlids better than SA cichlids ... and maybe you can do something with smaller African cichlids, like shell-dwellers (?)
