Here are a few pictures. He’s currently being kept solo in a 110 currently holding at 72 degrees. Filtration is an Eheim 2217 with hopes to upgrade to a sump in the near future just working out the kinks on my design. As for tank upgrades due to the two real sources of info from fishbase and planet Catfish I’d imagine realistically he will top out high 20s low 30s” range. I’m thinking of doing a plywood tank 6’ x 4’ with single acrylic viewing window to give him adequate space. I doubt he’ll make it to 48-60” as that’s max in the wild but I’d like the extra turning space for him with 48” depth. Also have been looking at a few deals on 210-240s that I might get prior to build Incase of quick growth spurt. I do plan on keeping the tank unheated as that is more natural.
As for food I will be feeding massivore, shrimp and Talapia, and possibly quarantined crayfish. I have yet to feed and will probably start tomorrow once a day.
After receiving him yesterday from Wes and putting him in the tank o probably watched him run into each corner of the tank for about 10 minutes non stop. I was actually worried he might ram too hard and hurt himself. From what I’ve observed so far . I’ve never had a catfish that clumsy running into the tank glass/ceramic pot.
He seems to be doing great and is non stop moving using all parts of the water colum. I’m working on putting a few rocks for him to feel comfortable during the day but for now just a ceramic pot he seems to enjoy. Few times I’ve put the white light on I can tell he isn’t a fan. Luckily I have the nighttime mode I’ve been keeping it on and he seems to enjoy.
I never expected or planned on keeping a true Silurus species Catfish. I’m sure some of you have seen me post on here looking for Ompok Catfish as they resemble Wels and other silurus cats but grow to a fraction of the size and very manageable to keep. After 4 months of hardcore looking and discovering an imposter (blue sheatfish) is being sold as ompoks I Gave up. I saw Wes post he had these cats in stock and the possibility of a ban in the future I didn’t want to regret not doing it. The Wels is by far my favorite catfish and I just couldn’t pass up the offer to get this.
Sorry about the long post but I hope the pictures are enjoyed. I look forward to updating.
