What did this hobby save you from?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have to start by saying I love my fish and dont know were I would be without em. I battled with drug addiction for many yrs. I started smoking at 12 and was a big pot head until I got my first 20 gallon hexagon tank then got addicted with fish. I used to spend every red sent I had on weed. My fish made me realise there is more to life then getting high. Also made me realise my responsibilities as a father and a man.now everything I got goes to taking care of my kid and when I got a few extra bucks its saved for a new tank , a fish or supplies.

Helped me keep my mind on fish rather then on other things, that would have either gotten me in trouble at home or with the law. Gave me something to look forward to when I would come home from school when I was younger, now I sit in front of my tank thinking about which was to spend $$$ on it hahaha

This hobby has done lots for me, I could write a list of things. But I would have to say it opened my eyes to aspects of life. I can say I've learned a lot of different things about other peoples cultures and the way fish keeping is a part of it. Learned many different things from a business aspect as well, after buying fish from many others on the forum, and also learned that you can make friends very easily when you have something in common:)

MFK has done me a lot more good that I wish I could show it.

I dont really think it has stopped me from much, bad, but it is awesome to watch the fish. It's amazing how fish are in so many varietys. I find it amazing that there is a such thing as a blue crayfish, now I own one :) View attachment 814350

It's also amazing how many thins can go wrong, but don't go wrong. So many diseases/issues... Now my friends when they come over they like to see how my fish are doing and they like to check up on Lenny ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1344229295.593213.jpg
Aquariums are IMO a whole new world in water...

Another really interesting thing I like is the fact that 92% of marine (SW) fish are captured from the ocean! I cant wait to finish my 75 gallon, and get a lionfish!

They helped me get over the loss of my red eared slider ;( I used that tank as my first aquarium about a year ago...

My fish have kept me from going through with suicide attempts in the past.

My fish have kept me from going through with suicide attempts in the past.

I hear ya man, my wife, fish and turtles are the only things that keep me going and pushing on.
I'm moving and just had to give up all my fish and I can already feel the insanity creeping up on me. Luckily I do get to keep my turtles unluckily they gotta stay with my grandparents but I set up a drip system so all they gotta do is rinse out the filter pads every now and then and feed em.

I would like to think fish keeping helped me in some way... but in reality, its added to the hobbies i already have... just means less free time for me to start / do other things...

Although i guess one thing the fish hobby has done for me is chill me out when i'm at home working...

This hobby has gave me something to look forward to; something to keep me occupied so I don't go crazy. I have bad hips, so I don't really go out, except for work, and my 1 brightspot in my day is coming home and seeing my fish swimming around when they see me, flapping their little tails back and forth like a dog wagging it's tail.

I keep my tanks in my basement, so my fish are truly excited to see me once or twice a day. I can literally spend hours in the basement watching my little buddies live their life.

I think this hobby has saved me from going off the deep end. My family probably thinks that I'm nuts for spending so much on my fish, but I always retort by saying that I could have a detrimental hobby like drug abuse or what have you.
