What do you guys/girls think is the most overrated cichlid?

So, some of you are equating how common or popular a fish is in the hobby, to whether or not it's overrated? Pretty interesting, really. I think oscars are among the most beautifully colored fish in the hobby... I don't care how common they are. I'm not a fan of hybrids, but even I would have to admit I like the occasional pic of a stunning red texas, and even saw a fader at a store recently that made my eyes pop! LOL...

Again... while I, myself, hesitate to call any fish "overrated"... I guess I choose my likes and dislikes by how the fish looks, and if it seems to fit my personality. Earlier, I said I just don't get the whole umbee craze. That said... I never kept one. To me, they just don't look that impressive. But if I ever kept one, could change my mind completely. I think I'll always have an oscar because I like their colors and puppy dog tendencies. I don't care if a million other people have 'em. I just like the fish. But I like a LOT of fish. I have one CA themed tank, one SA themed tank, one Malawi themed tank, and a saltwater tank... and I love ALL of my fish! LOL... so I guess I'm just undecided like that! LOL...

I agree the rarity of a fish means nothing to me. All of the so called common fish would blow peoples mind if they were hard to get. They're taken granted of only because we see them all the time. If it was next to impossible to get an albino tiger oscar many would chunk out some large cash for it. I still absolutely love Jags and I always will. That's the one fish I have a hard time walking away from. I have no room for one right now but Id probably buy a new tank just for one if I wasn't so good at talking myself out of it.

out where I am Festae are not really available and are expensive when they are. They can't be overrrated if they aren't overly abundant ya know. Discus, O's, Frontosa, FH, are all everywhere I look.

Why cant they be overrated? A scarce fish doesn't automatically mean its a personal joy to keep. Festae are stunning fish. I have heard more than once growing them out is a time consuming bore.

I guess I'm the Will Rogers of the fish world, as I've never met a fish I didn't like. :)

So true. Some of the more common fish today cost a weeks wages when they were first imported decades ago, and there were hobbyists & breeders lining up to buy them at those prices.

Its not so much the availability its the thing that if everyone talks them up. Having had frontosa they are potentially the least interesting of the more temperamental cichlids to keep but for some reason they are really expensive and something of a right of passage to keep. I've only had one that had any personality and he just died. O's just have a Me too vibe to them, no more personality than any other cichlid and no more color or unique body shape just so super boring to me. Discus are sweet looking but they are just ridiculous I don't think they warrant the amount of attention they get, not dramatically cooler looking to me than a great angle but ten times the headaches. FH are just a bunch of asian hype. Its not even a real fish to me, not that I don't like them some look great but common... I mean I don't understand why they get that amount of attention I really don't get how any hybrid can be so highly regarded and I like hybrids but honestly at the end of the day they are just not worth anything more than any line bred fish sorry. And for the record I love hybrids, I just don't understand how something so manufactured can suddenly have a mythical relevance to Asians everywhere, lol, the arrow makes sense but the FH is a complete joke.

I breed OB peacocks, so I'm not coming at hybrids as the anti-christ just confused by a continents obsession.

Don't hold back fella !

As has already been said, it's just down to personal preference. Severums do absolutely nothing for me, i've never owned any and they could be fantastic to own, but they are some Fugly fish

I'm still trying to wrap my head around Oscars being overrated. They get slammed on here like no other fish. Personally, I'm not a fan, but overrated??? Not around here.

Oscars for aggressive

basically, the biggest wimps that people think are aggressive! A lot of people say oscars are extremely aggressive but I have kept way too many and they all are peaceful.

Agreed, I could never keep them alive because other Cichlids would always kill them

For beauty and coolness, I'd say blood parrots and Flowerhorns

They look like mutated freaks of nature. Granted Flowerhorns are colorful but that hump is awful.

Disclaimer: These are my opinions.
