What do you guys/girls think is the most overrated cichlid?

Yeah... I agree. O's do get a bad rap around here, seems like. Again, I think its the "common" factor. But in fairness, I have seen some threads about Oscars on here, where plenty of people have argued on their behalf. Among CA/SA cichlids I have owned over the years, aside from my oscar, are: discus, zonatums, hartwegi, pearsi, bocourti, jack dempseys, angels, rams, festae, lyonsi, vontehillo, severums, red ceibal centurions, green terrors and jags. Wow... and I'm sure I'm missing someone. LOL...

Anyway, my point being. When all of that shook out, I have sold or traded most of them away at some point. I really loved my hartwegi, and he died from an accident. But aside from that, everyone one of them eventually became trade bait, or hit the market for sale. The ones I have left, that I just cannot bring myself to try to sell, to save my life?

Oscar, lyonsi, severum, vontehillo, red ceibal centurions. Of these fish, the lyonsi and red ceibals are probably the rarest. But I cherish them no more or less than Bubba (my oscar). He is the only fish I have that will literally rise out of the water to take food from between my fingers! LOL... This guy acts like a total puppy dog, as soon as the lights in the room turn on, because he knows food is coming! It is really hilarious to watch. He's a character. Interestingly, I got all of my fish from either a vendor or a club member. Bubba? Animal rescue. I paid $1. No lie. And I drove nearly an hour and a half to rescue him.

And yes... he's the O in my avatar, LOL... good ol' Bubba!

Oscars are a love hate relationship. I do not trust Oscars around most other fish. They will eventually kill them and eat them and their smart about it too. They won't eat them right away, just bully and wear the fish down until they can't run anymore then they get eaten. I have found however some fish who won't back down, convict and leporinus. I have 2 Oscars, 2 convicts and 1 leporinus all in the same tank. Neither can take the other so it's a good match.

That funny. My oscar doesn't both any of the fish in with him. In fact, HE got relocated after being evicted by my breeding zonatum pair! LOL...

yeah, beani's and haitiensis are overrated.
I hate how everyone listens to that top 21 most aggressive cichlids. I find that thread BS because it says buttikoferi's cant make it and are peaceful? Then that thread said beani's are the craziest? I spent $100 all on beani's and haitiensis they are very peaceful and beautiful but if they do fight they usually bloat the next day.
Personally every cichlid has there own attitude and personality.. This thread is about what you think is the most overrated cichlid species on average.

Overrated how?? The OP seems to be refering to cichlids that are supposed to be aggressive or really mean and don't hold up to the reputation given to them (overrated because they are not as vicious as the owner thought it would be), while others are refering to cichlids that are overrated in terms of their looks or the fact that they are overly hyped cichlids and ALWAYS posted about.

Overrated as far as aggression goes - I would have to go with my Argentea. He is not nearly as aggressive as other say they are. I've heard stories, but with mine they did not hold true.
Overrated as far as look goes - I think that Severums, Blood Parrots and Angels are ungly, however I've never owned any of them for the same reason.
Overrated as far as being too hyped up by others - I guess I'll say... nah, I won't go there.

Keep in mind this is what I feel/seen from my experience. I know everyone will say their Argentea is very aggressive, but I guess I got a pretty chill one.

Thats insane.. I had an Argentea two years ago. Man he was worth every penny, owner responsive, beautiful, aggressive, and he wouldn't take crap from anyone!
My dovii was scared ****less.

Its not so much the availability its the thing that if everyone talks them up. Having had frontosa they are potentially the least interesting of the more temperamental cichlids to keep but for some reason they are really expensive and something of a right of passage to keep. I've only had one that had any personality and he just died. O's just have a Me too vibe to them, no more personality than any other cichlid and no more color or unique body shape just so super boring to me. Discus are sweet looking but they are just ridiculous I don't think they warrant the amount of attention they get, not dramatically cooler looking to me than a great angle but ten times the headaches. FH are just a bunch of asian hype. Its not even a real fish to me, not that I don't like them some look great but common... I mean I don't understand why they get that amount of attention I really don't get how any hybrid can be so highly regarded and I like hybrids but honestly at the end of the day they are just not worth anything more than any line bred fish sorry. And for the record I love hybrids, I just don't understand how something so manufactured can suddenly have a mythical relevance to Asians everywhere, lol, the arrow makes sense but the FH is a complete joke.

I breed OB peacocks, so I'm not coming at hybrids as the anti-christ just confused by a continents obsession.

I think Flower Horns are among the best options if you're looking for a very beautiful fish with loads of personality and mean enough to kick anyones ass. I am personally a Flower Horn fan these fish are fantastic!!!!.

Actually, my argentae was not all that fiery either. So I believe you, personally.
