icwould do white sand because the black might make the fish really freaked out and white looks way better how big is ur tank it also depends on size 20-5 is black sand and 20-? is white .

Fish really don't care what color the substrate is. Hell they don't even care if there is substrate or not. LOL

No prob. I thought i would like white so I put white in the 180gal. IMO its to bright and the fish colors dont really stand out. My balas dont have that jet black to them, and my goldfish dont have that popping orange to them.

This thread shows a big P. endlicheri that has little markings from being on white sand. I prefer a more natural look, tans, beiges, rusty reds. Although black does look great.

Shoot I need to make an account on that before I can see it, oh well I guess I'll do that later on thanks for the input.

I'm in the same position myself of trying to find the best color for sand.

I would go with tan sand, which you can get via Lowe's sold as "Play Sand". It's cheap $4-5 for 50 gallons and it's pretty clean!

Good Luck!

I thought I heard somewhere that play sand is a little to dirty even when washed but instead to go with pool filter sand, but from all the comments so far I think my choice might be black but anyone how thinks other wise can possibly change my mind before its too late.

I've been searching everywhere for affordable "dark" colored sand. I didn't want completely black sand but definately not white. I couldn't find a single store around here that has anything but light colored sand. I ended up having to go with play sand from walmart that is a light tan color. I would go with a dark color if you can find it.

I have white sand in my 55g and even though it does show waste quicker, it's also easier to clean the waste up cause you know where it is.

Depending on what else is going in the tank you might want to consider the contrast between the rocks/decor and sand. I have dark lace rock so the white looks great. There's pics in my profile if you wanted to see the tank.
