red tail dont get me wrong, white would be more natural than black, like that guys setup. But it also appears he has alot of things floating on top to block out alot of the light. If your crafty white could look real good. But the same goes for black. But for me personally I dont have anything floating on the surface to block the light so 64watts over my tank makes things really glow. IF I got some floating plants to help block out I may like white better. But me personally next tank I will be getting tan sand, either tan pool sand, paver sand or something like that and using granite rocks to get that natural look without the worries of being to bright or to dark.

Yeah I know he has the driftwood and vines floating. But it actually just so happened that I was planning on having some fake plants floating on top as well. Because I was going to have a Black Aro and in their natural habitat they have lots of foliage growth on the surface plus I was hoping it would also discourage the Aro from jumping too.

IMO if your gonna have a good amount of stuff floating, hit the white sand. I had a aro in a white sand tank, but I dont know where it is, ill have to find it tmw. But it was super bright.

Wait you saying you lost your aro? Also some ppl say I should mix them but I've seen pics of tanks with black and white both mixed and I say it just looks like someone ate Oreos over your tank so that doesn't look to good.

I used to have white playsand in my old setup and I now have black estes in my current tank. I initially liked the look of the black but now I think it makes the tank look too dark (black background as well). It's not too bad with the lights on, but when the lights are off I can barely see anything in the black sand setup whereas I could with the white.

I think the white looked more natural, but I guess black looks more unique and "sexy". If all you're going to have is sand and no decor I think white is a little overwhelming. In my old setup I had a lot of dark rockwork so it balanced it out really well with the light sand.

Both kinds show off crap and debris really obviousl - it just looks dark on the white sand and light on the black sand, so there's no winner there.

Reagrding fish colors, it definitely makes a difference but the effect depends on the fish. I think most of mine looked better on the white sand. Again, I think it helped that I had all the dark rockwork mixed in which prevented them from looking too washed out. In my black sand tanks all the fish are much darker. Clown loaches develop dark patches between their stripes. My endlicheri was a little washed out on the white but turned really dark on the black - it was hard to even make out contrast with his stripes. Motoro also got really dark - the black circles around the spots got bigger and darker.

I think the most natural look avoids the extremes of black and white - on my next setup I'm going to go with a tan sand with some darker grains mixed in.
