I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.
Robert A. Heinlein

Freedom in USA means breaking in to a business at 4am and then having the right to sue that business for allowing me to cut myself on their broken window.

I like that quote and the quotes that were listed before.
We Americans as a nation.. by definition.. are free.
Freedom is not being ruled by people in other nations. We are ruled by our own government, and as a nation we answer to nobody.
In that sense, we are free.

I feel like America today.. we have no sense of.. togetherness. No common goal. We are all over the nation, living completely different lifestyles. Yeah, I guess this is freedom too, but bums on the street and street dealers and big dealers.. they aren't saying to themselves "I am proud to be here in the USA."
I feel that our nation can be taken advantage of by many people.. immigrants, dealers, bums. Not everyone here has a sense of pride being here.
We are the "melting pot", yet a whole lot of people here are racist. We have all these rights, but our jails are way overpopulated. We aren't doing all that we should be to beat racism and be as great as we can be. Just saying that we are the melting pot and letting a bunch of people with different racial, cultural and religious backgrounds in here isn't enough. We aren't free from racism or hate crimes.
I don't like how we are running our country. There is no place for mistakes to be made, but there isn't any real reason or motivation not to want to make mistakes for our nation together. The only reason we might not want to break rules is just so we can make a decent living.
Making a living is all that America is about to me. The fact that we can make it up from nothing is pretty much why people come to America and want to be Americans. There are ways up and out, stock markets and investments, bank plans, credit, interest, bonds, higher education to higher occupation, pay more to make more, loopholes, liabilities.. it's like a big friggen game! This is probably the only common goal that all americans have- make more money. The people with nothing want to make a decent living and live a comfortable life. The people with a lot want to make mad money and buy yachts and crap. No matter where you are or what class you're in, you want to make more money. This is nobody but Americas fault. This is we're infested with drug dealers, fraud, and scammers. Americas common goal- make more money. The people who live here and have no sense of pride still realize that the objective is to make money. They don't care about our nation, they feel that they belong here.. everyone belongs here, the melting pot.
I have a lot to say.. just don't know exactly how to say it. Our priorities aren't where they should be. America is not all that it promises to be. The government holds things back from and lies to us. Hypocrites and liars. We have to all have pride, all have a common goal to really be together and be proud of our nation. We need to all have a part to play without getting screwed by the system and having to "beat the odds". Is that not a confession to americas money infatuation and overly-emphasized class hierarchy? "Beat the odds," we hear it all the time in this sense. America is NOT together. There may be some really patriotic people, but there are honestly.. probably as many that aren't. They're just here.

Being free in America, is knowing that I have the right (and duty) to write a really funnny and true insult about hockey, beer, and healthcare, in response to canadiens trying to poke fun at us, but also knowing that since we're America, and they're Canada, I don't even have to. :D

Freedom is all relative, not absolute. A bird isn't even free - it's bound by the type of food it can prey on, places to lay eggs, etc. Americans aren't completely free - no one can be COMPLETELY free, if society is to function (you need rules or the guy with the biggest stick will just take all the money and food.. think Africa). But compared to the Burmese, for example, they have a huge amount of freedom.

FREEDOM = AMERICA

end of story

freedom can only be measured in the depths of one's pockets, especially here in america. as stated before the government is raping the working class. Most of our paycheck is taken to pay for random **** ill never see again. i worked hard for that money, and i dont get it. Wealthy men have all their money stored in bonds and stocks and what have yo, where the government cannot touch it.

i want a yacht too.

There have been tons of interesting responses, but I like this quote best, it's pretty much the way I live my life.

I am SOOOOOO using that!!!!!! You live in the US know, so it counts. I don't care what my professor says, that's deep! If that doesn't tug at anyone's heart strings I don't know what will. I'm sorry to hear that happened. No need to be sorry about how heavy that was, it's a real life event and it makes me appreciate living where I am now. Thank you for your input, your grandarents memory will be preserved in my research paper.

Glad I can help, and my families' experience help you.

Should thank you too. Good thread.
