what fish can live in the same tank as breeding apistogramma?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
this is very discouraging should i do something else? do you know if multies are easier to breed? ive heard good things about cold water changes simulating a rainy season.
I've got a breeding group of neolamprologus meeli that put out fry about once a month. I've raised two of the batches and have let the rest try to make it on their own. Meeli are terrible parents. I've never seen a group of fry survive in the tank with the adults.

if im trying to simulate a rainy season should i add more tanins during these periods because the rivers generally get darker with the debris from flooding? or tanins in a dry period because the water hasnt had water added to it? im gonna have constant tanins but im talking about adding almond leave and red bush tea to directly darken the water column.
I would allow the tannins to clear some during waterchanges. Dilution and all that.

You can do that absolutely. If you want to save money you could boil the tannins out of Oak leaves if you collect them yourself.
I did a little research and found out Texas has multiple specie of Oak trees. ? You can still add the Almond and Red Bush leaves.

Peat Moss from garden supply can also be used for Tannins just make sure it's Organic and doesn't contain fertilizer.
yeah i use it in my SA cichlid filters great stuff my pike really seems to like it.

If you want to breed any fish for profit, it is usually not a good idea to keep any other fish with it, because other fish will eat the eggs and fry.
With cichlids (after you have found a compatible pair,) you give the pair an appropriate size tank to themselves, and after they breed usually get a number of small tank to grow the fry out in, once they've been separated from the parents. Its good to separate fry by size, because they often grow at different rates.
Largest fry in one tank, medium in another, small in another, because large fry will often eat their smaller brothers and sisters

im familiar i was just curious how well the apistos would guard their eggs and if itd be effective to guard off such a shy fish. all of my large cichlids always raise their fry to adulthood or atleast dont eat them once theyre past the fry stage but i just leave them in their because im not looking to sell them or keep them but they usually make it to adulthood. so all apistos are equally bad parents in your opinion? i was thinking id do borelli or cacatuoides if it makes a difference in parenting.
