First off this is NOT one of those sadistic "check out how badass my ray is because it kills" threads, it's the opposite. I am getting a little disheartened by that fact I have lost three large fish in the last month from (what I believe) is just one of the trio of henlei but I can't be sure.

x2 (7") eartheaters
x1 (7") flagtail

If I add a new fish to the tank it takes the largest female a minute or so before she is on top of the new fish pinning it to the substrate. She will chew on them as long as she can hold them down, shred the caudal fins, flanks etc.. I've seen it in person. Water is pristine, rays are well fed please tell me I'm not the only one??

This is the female I think is the night time slugger and you can see the size of the fish I mentioned above.

someone on here told me to always leave a small light on, so tank is not pitch dark.

I have had my rays kill gatf, Silver dollars, and a few others, but nothing over 6" or so. Recently i added a 10" Armatus to the tank and my 11" male bd pounced on it, the armatus quickly got free and caused no damage. Now that the fish is adjusted to the tank he hasnt been able to catch the arm again.

Rays can be a ***** sometimes

Glad I'm not alone. Regarding the light, would the moon lights on the LED suffice? Care to elaborate on the need for the light?

Looks like that female is chasing down that geo!

When I first got a pair of hystrix I lost two 2" geos, but it was probably my fault since the fish were so small. I looked everywhere, but they just disappeared, I'm not 100% sure they were eaten but I don't know what else could've happened to them.

Other than that, I haven't had any issues, it's been about a year and a half.

I've been pretty lucky thus far (knock on wood!). Although my largest ray is only 12" female Hystrix who is pretty calm.
The only thing I've lost was a new Mono Sebae who got shredded and died a week later in a hospital tank. I believe it was the 9" Leo as he is the most aggressive.

It may, lots of fish kinda go into sleep mode with lights out except catfish and rays. that is a perfect time for a ray to catch an unexpected prey. But once a ray has learned he can catch your fish, there may not be anything that can stop him but more food!!!

I'll start using the moon lights instead of lights out from now on. Thanks man. I doubt more food will help in this case, this female is impossible to "fill up". No joke she out eats anything I've seen to date. I'm surprised she hasn't eaten her tail..........
