What got you into fish keeping?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Two things got me into it. One, Catching fish in Lake Erie (Mainly White Bass at the time). Two, seeing Longnose Gar at the Pittsburgh Aquarium. I've still yet to keep either but I plan on as soon as i have a large enough tank or pond.

LNG are my favorite gars. I love them! I can understand the effect they had on you. :)

My old man bred fish when I was a little kid. He apologizes to this day for it lol. "Sorry your always gonna have fish. That's the way it is"

Several years ago I bought a betta fish at petsmart for no logical reason when I was shopping for catfood or something with some questionable ex-girlfriend. I was under the impression I could keep one alive with just a live plant in a small bowl. So I went to a bettafish forum to look into it. .. 3 days later I bought a 5.5g starter kit with a little filter, heater, and light. Soon the 5.5 became a community tank. Then about a month down the road it turned into a 40b with a diy acrylic overhead sump running off an aquaclear 50 powerhead.

It was pretty much all down hill from that point on haha.

Always loved watching fish since I was old enough to walk. Always enjoyed complex diy projects. It just kinda happened

Almost the exact same story for me, was with a buddy at PETCO, we both bought bettas and 1/2 gallon tanks. Then we split on a 15, and then I got my own tank and sold him my share of the 15 gallon- I got a 30- then a 150- then a 330- and now a 350

My Dad had a couple 29 gallon tanks when I was a kid. But I have always remembered my uncles "huge" 55 gallon of my childhood.

What got me into monsters is the memory of a couple of Arowanas in the lfs as a kid.

I was 7 years old my aunt bought me a goldfish in a bowl as a reward to going to church with her. Loved the fish so much I started to go to church with her each time. Later, my fish bowl was replaced with a 20 gallons along with an eel and Frontosa.

A few decades later, my love for fish has not lost a beat....

Just as the title says, what brought you into this hobby: personal interest, born and raised with it, profit by breeding and selling, relaxation, anything else?

For me, I'm just a huge animal lover and enjoy having pets knowing I'm giving them a good life. I'm also big into scuba diving and find aquatic life interesting. I've only kept bettas in the past but will soon be setting up a 150 gallon tank and due to the fact that I strive to give my animals the best life possible I quickly became immersed in learning the in's and out's of the hobby.

to me it's from my dad.. he used to keep various types of fish but the most special of em all is his giant red tailed gourami.. after his giant gourami died, he lost interest on keeping fish.. all of the tank was empty for about a yr, then after tht i filled it up again with oscars amd other cichlids.. my dad would nver will go into fishkeeping again but he will always support me in my hobby :)

I'm fairly new to the hobby and my story's not that great.

My dad got me into fish keeping. A few years ago, he got a flowerhorn and didn't have a clue how to take care of it. Fed it the same dried krill everyday because that's all it would eat and let the water parameters get out of control. Well it pretty much ended up getting every disease known to fish. I tried to save him but it was too late.

From that day on, I vowed to get my own flowerhorn and do everything in my power to keep it alive, happy and healthy.

I got my fish in April 2013 and he's doing great as of now.

That's awesome the devotion to giving your fish the best life possible. But a flowerhorn? Haha those huge nuchal humps are disgusting. Are you one of those people that enjoys them? If so...please explain why

LOL...I don't know...it's just one of those things that grow on you...like they're so ugly, they're cute!

I guess it's because I felt a certain kinship to my dad's fish.

Also, my fiance had a flowerhorn that I used to think was ugly as sin. But then I warmed up to him after he started to recognize me and follow me around in his tank. He committed suicide not long after. Took the leap of faith when no one was home and popped the lid right off. :(:rip

Kid down the street had angelfish and I was fascinated. The next christmas I got a ten gallon. That was 45 years ago. I kept guppies in mason jars before that.
