What got you into fish keeping?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My sister in law got me hooked. She had a brackish tank with a green scat and it was the coolest fish, lots of personality. When a local pet store had a sale on tanks she talked me into buying. 20 gallon. Started out with smaller fish but then i bought a green severum not realizing how big they grew. So that was my excuse to buy a 55 gallon and since then MTS hit me. And not just MTS, but BTS also (bigger tank syndrome).

I would say it came from my dad we had several tanks as I grew up. My first personal fish was from a ping pong ball game at a fair. Then I had a betta. I always remember our neighbors when I was kid though they had 2 150g with 12+ inch Oscars in them. (this was back in 1985). I also grew up catching crabs crayfish and tadpoles with my little yellow minnow bucket.

As an adult getting into fish keeping is the fault of Electric blue lobsters saw them ad had to have them. That was about 5-6 years ago. probably would not be as bad as I am but my wife has been very supportive. Se has also claimed ownership of most of my fish....

Hahaha that's awesome your wife is so supportive. I love those electric blue crayfish, my dad had one in his 55. I fell in love with him quickly.

I have always loved taking care of fish since I was a child so when I got the money, I bought a 20G, a 120G and a 250G. Now, I'm back to no fish at all after going back to my home country but once I'm well off again, I'll do a 500G.

My family and I had a small fish tank when I was young but my uncles and old boss were the ones that got me into the hobby. I started out with small community fish, moved onto South American Cichlids, moved onto African Cichlids and now am just getting into monster fish. I really love this hobby and have 10 tanks in total where I breed numerous African Cichlids.

That ping pong fair game like beer pong but with fish in a bowl and if you hit the shot you keep it?

Which monster fish are you going to be keeping?

I went to my uncles when I was about 10 yrs old and he had a 55g in his basement with neon tetras and other community fish. Ever since then I really liked aquariums. About 6 months later I was in his garage with my grandpa and the same tank was in his garage empty with the gravel, filter, heater and plants inside the tank. So I asked him why he took it Down, he said that he didn't want it anymore and was trying to get rid of it, he then asked me do you want it? And I said yes! And that's basically how the addiction began.

When I was 10 years old my neighbor gave me a 20 gallon fish tank with everything that goes with it and a pink convict cichlid. I had the fish for about 7 years until it died for no discernible reason.

A simple gift started a lifetime obsession with goldfish.

When I was little I was very hyper active. This was way before we had fancy names and drugs for things like ADHD. Well, when I was about 3 somebody figured out that watching fish swim around in a tank was one of the few things that would calm me down and hold my attention for any length of time. I have had fish more often than not for the 40+ intervening years.
