Understood.....Seeing that I live in the darn boonies.....Very difficult for me to get one done like this-etching is the route I would like to go if it can be done......

how big of a tank? If its small you could probably cut the glass into chunks and silicone it back together without it bursting when filled. Ok that was a bit of an exaggeration but if you want to etch you will be 100% fine with a small tank.

Not sure how the acid etching would turn out but I did see something in HD I'm going to try. They make a window film that is like stained glass but looks like frosted stone coat.

I have used glass etching kits on some very thin glass vases, etc.

It will not weaken a tank.. it is exactly the same as sand blasting...it just roughs up the surface.

Most of the 'glass etching' involves painting the acid onto the glass... waiting less than 1 minute and rinsing.

Put it on the outside of the tank.. it will be a little rough and would tend to collect dirt - harder to clean.

I think this is a great idea. I may just have to put some designs on the sides of my tanks... Cool idea.

A great way to 'reclaim' a tank that has some 'scratches'.

What would be your thoughts on trying it on a 125 first.....Or should I go with a smaller tank right now......If I mess this up----it would cost me roughly $700 to replace the 125....So kinda want to be sure on this idea...

lol why can't you be normal and paint the background black! lol :D

Hell-Whats the fun in being "normal" gal.......

Just tired or the normal everyday run of the mill backgrounds is all----Most of my tanks either have a blue or black painted background.....Just looking to do something a bit different was all...

sounds like a cool idea. ive sandblasted several designs on car windows and i really dont think it will weaken the glass, as people have said, it just roughens it up. me, i would first try it on a cheap 10g tank just to see if i like the effect before going bigger.

is it hard to find the acid for this? sand blasting is easy but cleaning up is a pain; sand gets everywhere!

I got a 20 long I think I will do this two first then.......Might do that tonight actually and see how it turns out...

The acid is easy to find---At least inmy area-It can be found at most hobby/craft stores.....

I use to use a bead blaster back in my welding shop,So very familar with how much of a pain it would be to due this on a tank......Thats why I want to easy method of etching it instead...

as far as doing it on the 125....im 100% sure there will be no problem filling the tank...and im 99% sure you wont have any other problems in the future...but im also 99% sure that if you do it will be from the etched piece of glass.

When you score glass to cut it you are creating an area of imperfection where a crack can easily form. This is why when you break the glass it cracks exactly where you scored. In essence you will be scoreing the entire back panel of your tank. So if an event occurs that stresses your tank to the limits it will fail first at this back panel. I doubt this would happen but in he event you might wish you had gone another route.
