For me I found it depends which store you go to.
In Red Deer AB I saw emerald brochis and Peters Elephantnose.
Here in Calgary I have seen various Knifefish, Ctenopoma acutirostre, Mastecambelus Aral, Aequidens Diodema, Striped Leporinus and some 3" True Parrot cichlid Hoplarchus psittacus that a customer surrendered.

In a small mom and pop store I saw striped african scats the size of a loonie for $10 each as "Striped Scat" in 2011.
I passed that up and have never seen them since for any price.

Hello I was just wondering what is the coolest or rarest fish you have seen at your local big box store in my expeirence diffrent areas have diffrent fish at petsmart or petco
personally Its african brown knife or BGK for me
I’ve seen Senegal bichir, African leaf fish, Flowerhorn, Red Devils, EBJD, calvus, amd some nice lemon jakes. That’s about it for freshwater. I’ve seen lots of cool marine inverts at petco

Petco prices are usually insanely low. I saw an ornate for $10. I don’t know why I didn’t get it.

Oh I forgot to mention this one, petco was selling a small peacock mantis shrimp for like 7 bucks because they thought it was a pistol shrimp. Unfortunately it was missing one of its raptorial appendages so I didn't buy it.
It would grow back eventually. And for the price of a mantis vs pistol, it would be worth it.

It definitely varies from store to store as far as the quality and care of their fish. Petsmart is usually better with prices. ... Supplies are typically a little cheaper at PetSmart. Totally depends on the store but petco offers stores way more flexibility.

I think petsmart has better quality fish, which isn’t saying much! The rarest thing you can get at pet smart here is a “Dinosaur Fish” (Senegal Bichir). Petco has a wide variety of saltwater fish, urchins, shrimp, and even corals! Look at these screenshots from my petco:

All I see is dead fish.
I can trust that their freshwater fish are somewhat healthy (but petsmart has healthier fish overall).
I picked up my first 4 saltwater fish from petco. Ever seen brook, velvet, and ich all at once?
Unless something is incredibly rare and cheap, I will never buy another saltwater fish from petco.
