sorry but that made me laugh. so your fish had that thing is it's mouth and something else on it's scales too? just trying to clarifye since you posted 2 pics Emily

Sorry for your lost

Nope..just in the fishes mouth from my understanding. Cymothoa exigua only enter through the fish's gills and then takes control of the host's tongue.

...start dosing prazipro maybe?..

I was also thinking this might need to be reported? at least to people who are researching it..

just noticed the OP is from WA

Ya I was thinking that too...maybe some scientists are still learning about this parasite?....This parasite was first discovered in the United Kingdom in 2005, so its definitely a possibility because that is not that long ago.

I've seen this in fresh and salt water before, its a scary looking creepy crawler!

where did you get your fish?.
.Maybe reporting it to Fish and Game will get it to where it needs to go.

it so Icky i wouldn't it to spread.. be it from the pet store or its distributors..they probably need to know about it.

Really? This parasite has expanded its range all the way to Florida and can live in saltwater conditions?! This does not sound good :(

I don't know their range but from what I've read they're often found in/on Snapper and where I'm from there are Snappers around here. I think i've seen it before or something closely related at least.

Ya I read that they're often found in/on snappers, thats why its kinda weird she found this parasite in her red tail payara's mouth...but I guess if it can be found in/on snappers it definitely can be found in other fish
