What is wrong with my tsn

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I ended up setting up a 10 gallon I had handy. I used some sponges and pot scrubbies from my sump to set up the filter. I added 2 teaspoons of Epsom salt to the water. He is gasping pretty hard for air and laying side ways under the plant I put in there. I have pimafix, should I add it in just as an extra precaution for internal parasites?

Was he gasping for air before moving him to the 10? Also I asked before have you seen him defecate? I'd hold off on the Pimafix only because in my experience adding too many meds to the water can cause excess stress on the fish and he's already had to deal with being moved and the Epsom salt addition. I really hope he makes it for you and I hope the thread gets more attention then it has tomorrow so more people can offer up suggestions and help you out.

He was gasping a bit before the move, but not quite as bad as now. He was thrashin pretty good in the net so I imagine he is pretty stressed from the move. Hopefully he is doing a bit better by morning. As for deficating, I haven't seen it. It should be easier to tell now that it's in a tank of its own now. You said I could dose up to 3 tsp per 5 gallons, but how long would you suggest waiting before increasing the dose? Again thanks for all the help.

Wait till morning it'll give him a chance to settle a little making the dose less likely to stress him out too much. Also add only two teaspoon fulls at a time and then give him an hour and then add the other 2. Remember the small tank is making the change a lot more sudden for him then it would be in a bigger tank. I also should have added mix the solution in a cup before introducing it into the tank and in the evening do a water change. Hopefully he'll have sorted himself out by then and I don't want him sitting in Epsom salts too long.

Okay thanks. Just to give you peace of mind I did mix the salt in a bit of tank water before I added it in. Lol I will let you know how he looks tomorrow.

Any update on his condition?

And does anyone else have an opinion on what's happening to the tsn? I myself have given my opinion but moved the thread here hoping to get people with better knowledge then I to chime in, so if you've got an idea please feel free to add it.

I added in 4 more teaspoons of the Epsom salt over the course of the morning. He is not gasping for air anymore and seems to be improving. He doesn't seen to be struggling as much to stay down, but is still laying on his side. I will keep updating as the day goes on, but do you think I should try doing anything else for him? Normal salt, pimafix, increase temp, or just leave him be?

Glad to hear he's having less trouble staying down and has stopped gasping. Now you say he's leaning on his side, so is he able to stay down without effort? and is just sort of bobbing on the bottom as he leans to one side? What temp is the water at now? I'd raise the temp to 82 if it isn't there already. I'd still stay away from adding anything else but you can drip some of the Epsom solution on some pellets and see if he takes it. That should help accelerate the effect of the Epsom and his recovery. Just feed very very sparingly if he does take it.

I tossed a small piece of shrimp in last night and it's still there today, but I will try to get him to eat a small piece tonight. Yes he stays down with little/ without effort, but is just kind of tilted on his one side. I will grab a picture

Sorry for the dark picture. I am leaving the lights off for him. He swam around a little bit and floated down to the bottom, but then rested on his side.
