What is your policy on tipping wait staff?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^^ yeah that's total crap... I'm thinking to myself, "All you did was take my money!"...

I once made a purchase there and didn't have the change amount,it was like twenty cents or something and I didn't want to break a dollar so I reached into the tip cup and gave the cashier the amount.

i give tips but i hate that it's expected, i want to give a tip because they did something good not feel pressured to give a tip because its the "norm". i remember a waiter once asking for tips and my friend flat out refused

If the waiter/ess earned the tip and gave great service then I don't mind tipping (usually 20%). If the service was average then you get a very small tip and if it sucked then no, no tip - sorry. If you want my money then give me good service. I don't go out to eat so that I can get someones attitude b/c they don't like your job or whatever the issue is - if you act like that then forget a tip, you deserve your 2$ an hour for being a rude.

I actually prefer to take out now as opposed to eating out b/c I don't like being obligated to give a tip. (I only don't mind when I get an awesome server)

I'm with Sumo. I HATE HATE HATE the idea of tipping. It makes me sick. I wish we were like Japan were tips are not expected and turned away. You get great service no matter what. With that said, I still tip because I don't want to seem like a dick, and because it's 'expected', which pisses me off. Not to mention this country has the worst customer service I've ever encountered. It's almost as if people are bothered that they have to wait on you or help you out.

If everything goes good, I'll leave double the sales tax. If it's bad, I have no problem leaving $0. What really gets me though, is the sense of entitlement from people in these service type jobs. I don't care if you're just 'trying to survive'. I must have missed the part where that was any of my problem. If it's that bad, go find another job.

THANK YOU!!!

and i like how we are "ignorant" because it's not our job to pay them to do their job

i tip according to service. if they suck then there tip will reflect that. but most of the time i tip very well. i know when these guys do well they are working hard and deserve a good tip.
but i do see where the 20% can be a little much. i have wait staff friends and some of them come out at the end of the week making 20 + bucks an hour. and thats cash! so i dont feel bad at all for them. its just like anything else do your joband you will be rewarded

What about at the bar?

I usually tip a dollar a drink which ends up being about 30%. Sometimes, I tip more if the bar tender is cute or Im really thirsty that night and want prompt service. Youll be surprised how quick youll get a drink at the club when you tip $10 on your first drink.

Honestly Im shocked at how many of you dont tip or hate the idea. Hell, Id rather we ALL work on tip/commission. It would make most everyone (there are always going to be losers out there so not everyone) work harder for the money they earn and in turn would mean much better productivity. Damn me and my conservative/capitalistic ideals...

no i don't tip. but thats because the places i normally eat at usually have this thing on the receipt where they charge u an extra 30% on top of the bill for waitress servicing.

although i tip the taxi drivers if they don't talk to me and just get me where i need to go.

Thats INSANE! So your servers get 30% no matter how hard they work? No wonder your country is circling down the toilet even faster than the US, dont worry we arent far behind. :(

I'm pretty surprised too. Anyone that knows me knows that I'm not one for social convention, but this is one area, where I go along with it. I usually tip around 18% if service was good, 20 if excellent (and cheap, lol) and 15 if not so good...1 penny if it really sucks. Giving nothing just means you're a cheap-ass. And, yeah, I usually go about $1 per drink unless I get hooked up and then it's a lot more. Damn me and my libertarian/capitalistic ideals, lol

I appreciate good service and will tip anywhere from like 15%-30% if I'm in a good mood, and just ask my beer or drink stays full.

What about at the bar?

For sure!! The bar is the last place I want to be waiting for a drink... I make sure and put the tip in (if it's a tip jar) when there looking.. so they'll come around quickly next time they see me.. and I do tip everytime I go up to the bar.. Fortunately for the bartender the tips get better as the night goes on.. :naughty:!
