what kinda cichlid is this

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If it's marked as a freidrichstalli then that's what it should be unless it looks like a dovii or grammode. Why try to confuse the guy?
8$ give or take should be the price for them at that size.

Nice fish.

It's funny, but I've owned loisellei, freddys, and motas, and they're still really hard to tell apart at when they're small. I would guess the photos are of loisellei.

omgoodnesswhat a beauty.

I agree, with more certainty.
P. loisellei are commonly sold as P. friedrichsthalii.
Just another one of those fish that are sold as something they aren't quite, close but not quite. For example: the common "severum" is really H. efasciatus, not H. severus. The common "red terror" is usually exCich. urophthalmus, not exCich. festae. The common "green terror" is usually A. sp. "Gold/Silver Saum", not A. rivulatus. The common "festivum" is usually M. insignis, not M. festivum.

In general:
Loisellei have thick gill patches and short, thick and generally squat bodies.
Freddies have thin gill patches and long, thin bodies.
Motas have thick gill patches and long thin bodies.
Barring can also be an identifying factor but is subjective to environmental conditions. A loisellei can easily be confused for one of the others if it is stressed or constantly picked on and completely bars up appearing to look more like a Freddie, instead of the usual half-barring or no barring (only midlateral blotches) of a more relaxed and/or happy Loisellei.

Very well summed up! I've bought several "Freddys" which turned out to be loisellei. Your notes on telling loisellei/friedrichsthalii/motaguense apart are spot on.

No-one's trying to confuse the guy. Most are trying to help.
I'm providing simple facts. Unfortunately we don't always get what we pay for. Being an avid enthusiast at the least I would assume you to know that. Just as are the cases with "GT's", "RT's", "Trimacs", "Severums" and "Festivums" - a lot of times those "freddies" being sold as "freidrichsthalii" are actually P. loisellei. That's a fact.
The last pictures show, without a doubt, P. loisellei.

My male freddies are 6" and my females are 5" now, and they are easy to tell apart. I'll try to get some pics up later tonight. They look nothing like these loisellei, and may help you confirm what you have.

more pics of what some people said to be a loiselli. my earlier pics are at page 3. the current pics of the fish kinda got beat up by my other cichlids wen it was introduced in the tank.

Still a lois, hun. Those shots are a perfect example of stress-barring. Looking like that I could see why one would think it was a Freddy.
Poor thing. Hope it's doing better now. :)
