What mistakes did you make when you started out?

correst me if i am wrong on the name of the eel.

tire track eel.

my biggest mistakes... all occured in my first tank (a 10gal)
starting out with 10gal tank
taking out everything during water changes
using plastic plants
using completely white gravel
buying a pictus cat and a school of cardinal tetras for the same 10gal.
buying only 2 bronze cories
buying only 1 silver dollar
buying all of the following for the same tank: 2 kissing gouramis, 1 lyretail molly, 1 pictus cat, 1 whiptail cat, 1 dwarf gourami, 2 bronze cories, 1 rainbow shark, 1 sailfin plec, 1 silver dollar, 4 cardinal tetras, 4 neon tetras, 2 kuhlii loaches, 1 sailfin plec

yeah... i started off a bit rough in fishkeeping...

using algae destroyer....which led to killing a bunch of fish.

not cycling the water, adding a bunch a bunch of tropical fish without a heater(led to the lose of my 20 dollar elephant nose) and all that stress caused ick which killed more than 20 dollars worth of fish. lol

UNFORGETABLE MISTAKE I had was sucking the hose to do a water change and accidently drinking aquarium freshwater just like the other dude who posted.

Within that week I had troubles drinking clean water thinking that they might taste like aquarium water )

A few years ago I put a feeder goldfish with an oscar. The reason why I did this was because I thought the oscar looked lonley and needed a buddy..........long story short, it did not end well. LOL

20 litre tank 2 1'' oscars needless to say it didnt work out i didnt lose any stock but learnt a valuable lesson

one, i never change the water. two, never asked if the fish were legal in california. and three, never checked if they were compatible with other fish

Putting 6 snakeheads, One Pacu and a Pleco in a 10 gallon tank. They were all very tiny when i first got them. Let's just say I had to return most of them to the LFS after a few weeks.
