What mistakes did you make when you started out?

Not buying the biggest tank I could afford off the bat, not setting up a quarantine section for new specimen's first. Not cycling tank's long enough.

not doing water changes
when i did clean out my tank taking all the water out
accidently drinking the water to start the siphon
turned my heater on outside water then put in CRACKK
keeping goldfish with cichlids OUCH !
currently overstocking 55 gal wich i though was huge !!

I started in this hobby when I was 12 and in general terms did it pretty good.

My two newbie mistakes were keeping gondfish along with tropical fish, the gold fish just kept on dieing all the way long and I didn't know why.....

Despite goldfish dead I was able to succeed with the rest of my fish, guppies, angelfish, neons, pleco, corrydoras and a betta until I decided to buy a very nice fish that i was told it was kind of "agressive", so i kept him in the same tank separated by a glass.

After a month I thought it was time to remove the glass because I was sure the new one "had gotten accostumed" to the others and then I removed the glass and went to school....

Bad Idea, the new one was a Tiger Oscar fish and when i came back from school I found that my fish stocking was severely decimated by that little fishie.....:screwy: :cry:

I was about 10 years old and tried to clean the calcium deposits on my 10 g tank with a scrub pad and dishwashing liquid. Back then, I thought, it's just water and bubbles and they have bubbles in the tank anyway so no harm. Needless to say, all my tetras died.

Oh boy...Not cycling tanks, not acclimating fish, one time, I actually bought 3 fish with ick, and I knew they had it, but I was too eager to wait..they all died the next day.

At least they were in their own 10 gallon instead of my 75...But THEY WERE 26$

At the time I didn't know about cycling, I would change the water once a year and when I would clean the tank I would take everything out.

Aiming the spraybars down instead of up/across the top of the water. I kept wondering why my fish were always at the top gasping for air...duh!

Tons of the norms too...luckily, I found this website...which might also turn into a mistake.

my biggest mistake was buying to many fish and putting them into a ten gallon tank, i had a 2" pink kissing gaurami, 3"pleco, and a 5 inch i believe tire tred eel. correst me if i am wrong on the name of the eel.
