What mistakes did you make when you started out?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my big mistake was buying small fish that grew big and not having anywhere to put them. I did manage to get ahold of a bigger tank for them, but shouldnt have bought them in the first place. As in I bought a blue channel catfish at like an inch or 2 and had him in a 10gal for awhile x__x

A big mistake i did when i got my first tank (2g) was actually listening to petco fish people....they let me buy with all assurance the following : a tiger barb, 3 feeder goldfish, 2 platy and an adf, all for the 2g. U can imagine they all died, and i quickly upgraded to a 10g.

Too many to post! LOL!!!!! Not all my fault however i was uninformed when i started and i recieved bad info, but i've learned from all these lessons so now it's no biggy but still erks me....

I didn't cycle my first tank, 10 G overstocked .. I also... did water changes but left the heater on and it busted when the water hit it refilling ... bought another one and the following week i took the heater out and turned it off during water changes... that one melted the carpet.. never had a problem with heaters again. lol.

I used to always do 100% water changes every month.
I didn't think my otto needed any type of food.....
I kept scissortail rasboras in a ten gallon.
I kept fish other than a betta in a ten gallon.
I melted my shoe with a heater.
I accidentally set a heater to 94 degrees.
I bought a dyed fish (not forgiving myself for that, even after 8 years).
I have a common pleco in a 55 gallon and I dont have parental funding for a 125gal.

MFK Really Healed Me From Stupidity...

I went nuts and bought too many 55 gallon tanks. I should have purchased fewer larger tanks. Now I'm finding out that your new tanks are only worth pennies on the dollar when you go to resell them. Another thing that I did was to purchase crappy filters. It is worth it to spend a little more and get good quality filters.

I tried to treat my diseased fish with penicillin without putting him in a QT tank first. I put the penicillin in the tank after removing the carbon from the filter (As per Petco salerep instructions) and left the tank alone. That was Friday night. Came back Sunday morning to find my tank water looking like Skim milk from the algae bloom. Couldn't see the fish more than an inch from the glass. Added the carbon back in the filter and started dialy 50% water changes for the next month or so until the ammonia and nitrites were at 0. By some miracle everything survived.

That was my first tank about 15 years ago. Lesson learned -- penicillin kills the bad with the good.
