I had 2 jack dempseys, 2 oscars, 2 texas cichlids, a large common pleco, and a rainbow shark all packed into my 20 gallon. Rarely changed the water, and filtered it with the stock filter that came with the tank from Petsmart. Fed them 2 dozen unquarantined rosy reds every weekend, and couldn't understand why they got ich so frequently. :screwy:
hahah wow...all in a 20 gallon....That is hilarious, we all make mistakes.
Mine was doing (entire) water changes once a month, rinsing filter media in tap water after a water change, and overfeeding. I never really overstocked my tank, I do that now, once I know what I am doing. Just out of curiosity, how big did that jacks and Oscars get in a 20 gal?

When I first started (about 1975) Monthly water changes, UGF, never pre-cycled the tank, no dechlorinator; just about everything that you shouldn't do. Strangely enough I had very minimal losses.

Whrn I first started I got what I thought was a big tank a measily 29 gallon I got 2 oscars had no clue what a gravel vac was and didnt know to do water changes I just added water the oscars got about 5 inches got hith and died eventually they lasted around 6 months I still feel horrible about it those pour little guys.

Some mistakes I made as a kid before I knew what doing research was:

Too Many fish for tank
Too big of fish for tank (of coarse I thought it was small enough when I bought it but it grew)
Never cycled tanks.
Overfed my fish

These are all mistakes that I made before I knew anything about keeping fish. A good mistake is one you walk away from and learn something.

I made that same mistake. I signed up then found MFK and have never been back.
