what species is this little guy.?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My lfs now has them labelled as Channa "la cheng" and he will grow to 5 inchs. (Hes already bigger than this). I found some pictures from 2011 of a channa someone inported called red rim (im guessing red fin). His spots etc all look the same. Is "la cheng" catch all for "we dont really kbow what he is so will label him as this?"

No it's not la cheng , that's yet another different species lol.

Channa sp. "La cheng" is also called as sp. Assam & sometimes "blue bleheri" . This species was officially described this year and now has an official scientific name, Channa andrao.

yes I have seen both names "channa sp. redfin" and "channa sp redtrim' used for the same species in the past. I'm still confident this is what u have.

It's not uncommon for species to be mislabeled/mixed up, especially when u start dealing with species that are undescribed, because each importer/exporter may use a slightly different name for each species since there is nothing official. Ad to that that many names are already similar for fish that all look quite similar it leads too all sorts of confusion.
