I doubt it was your municipal water. I work in the industry (on the wastewater side) but the treatment is very similar.

normal water conditioners should take care of any free chlorine residual or chloramines (chlorine + ammonia) in the water.

municipal water should not be that deadly to your fish if you are using a water conditioner.

I believe something else is happening here. you said you had other deaths from your friends overfeeding.

was their high ammonia or nitrite in the tank because of this?

it would be good to post your water parameters so we canhelp to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.

one i did ask for your opinion on my typing...two i don't sit at the computer so when i use it to post it is on caps from my kid playing on it...i have no problem reading it...three I DON'T CARE....

the tank had crashed before but was fine now...novaqua, says on the back not a remover of chloramines or ammonia and to use amquil for that...i don't know i got this bottle until it was to late...i will never buy this again!!!

exactly...any thoughts on the cause of death...and why my aro is going strong...i thought for sure once all the tinfoils whent down the wobbly aro was next but it pulled through...

i normally use amquil witch is produced by the same company...thats why when i noticed it i didn't think twice....

the fact that the tinfoils all died quickly but the arro was fine is what lead me to believe it was a pH issue.

I used to suffer from 'old tank syndrome' with my heavily stocked tanks.

ie the waste levels would slowly build up over the week, decreasing the pH to a low level

my tinfoils would exhibit signs of ph shock (cloudy eyes, white cottony fungus on all scale margins etc) while my south american fish (found in naturally acidic water) were fine.

I used to do a water change, it would bring the pH back up, and the symptoms of the pH drop would disappear overnight.

I suspect that perhaps in a heavily stocked tank, the pH may have been dropping, then, with a 75% water change, it rapidly came up too quickly, killing the barbs.

but that is just a guess based on past experiences with tinfoils..

it doesn't really help explain what happened to your other fish prior to all this..
