What to do with a fish thats getting way to big?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you really love the fish and want the best then figure out transportation to the people on here who say they can take it. Three possibilities so far have come up in this thread. Or call aquariums in cities next to yours.
Good luck. I hope it receives a good home.

I hate to agree with killing a fish because that's basically admitting failure as a fishkeeper. But if he hasn't gone to someone or a zoo within a year, and you can't get a 1000 gallon tank running, it might truly be the only viable option. Might as well feed it to your other fish as suggested.

This is why I still don't understand why they are sold to the general public. They should be a special order item like the oddball doradids and other large catfish.
They expect you to kill it long before it outgrows your *55 gallon* aquarium that is *sooooo huge.*
(I can't believe I just used the astericks to indicate sarcasm online....I'm just gonna go back and read the rest of the thread now.)

I am glad that such a topic is the object of some serious discussion and advice and not the usual, stupid, flaming!

Your problem is a problem we all, sooner or later, have to face.

You already decided on offering your Pacu to someone willing to take care of it. Nice. Now just organize the drive.

AND PACUS -AS WELL AS OTHERS - SHOULD BE FORBIDDEN!

If the LFS's weren't making money selling pacus & oscars to people with undersized tanks, they probably wouldn't exist. Its just part of the game sometimes....Just be thankful that there are forums like this were the fish can be re-homed instead of dying of claustrophobia.

I know I am new here and not looking to start trouble or place blame or anything negative towards members here; but is'nt it the responsibility of the person buying the animal to know wether or not they can adequately take care of ANY animal?

I can agree with restricted but I rarely feel it is ever right to FORBID almost anything.

Thats why it is such a sensitive subject. There are measures that need to be taken on both ends of the buying and selling but rarely ever happen. There is a line between hobby and entertainment. Unfortunately there are more people looking for entertainment instead of hobby enjoyment. i.e. oscars, pacu, id sharks in small tanks.

Be most wellcome!!

You are right, of course! I am a latin hot blooded old geezer and tend to exagerate my statements.

But we defend the same point:)

you are right but my problem is when a pet store expert gives out incorrect information. not saying they all do it but i'm sure some of them would say YEAH you can keep this pacu in your 55 gallon tank that's really a 20 and you're just lying to me to make it seem like you have a bigger tank then you do!
