What was I thinking? New GG in the house

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tank has a calmness with the bully sev gone. The other two have a love hate relationship but seem to be getting along well enough that the gourami is doing well and seems calm now. The loaches that found their way into the mopani found their way out and were schooling this morning. Fed the tank and everyone but the loaches were comfortable enough to eat.

Last pic really blurry

Picked up an additional 3 roseline sharks to be able to get the school up to 9 fish. They are in QT before they go into the 300. Loving the activity level in this tank now. The tank feels very lively with all the different fish in there

Had to change up the 300 gallon a little. The female sev decided she would try and mate with the male she did not like. She was getting so aggressive defending her little spot that I fear for the safety of the smaller clown loaches. When she was in the 90g and decided she was going to mate, I needed up with a few dead hoplo cats which I believe was due to cichlid mating aggression. So for now the female sit in a 40B until I figure if I want to try her with the dominat male sev in the 90g or rehome her.

With the female sev. out of the 300, I feel a sense of calmness to the tank. The only issue Im seeing is at time the remaining male sev tends to "shadow" the gourami. It will just swim with it in a way that you almost think they are schooling. There is no aggressive behavior at all about this but the gourami doesnt like it. He almost acts like he is being chased. This is very mild in the grand scheme of things and I think these two should work out well together unless the gourami decides to turn and become a monster.

The 3 remaining roselines to go into the 300 (for a school of 9) are still in quarantine but its approaching two weeks and Im feeling comfortable enough to move them in soon at this point. Then the stocking will be complete.

Needed to update with a few pics

Tank shot this morning, just a flurry of activity with all the smaller fish

The RTGG officially has been named, I call it by its initials G.G. (think Gigi) this really is not based off sex but so the wife can remember that its a Giant Gourami, lol

Been a hot mess with trying to get the 3 Red sevs to work in the tank. Finally the sub-dominant male is the perfect tank mate to the RTGG. The other male and female red sev are now sharing a 90 gallon and doing so much better. I have calmness in the 300 and in the 90g. There are times where I feel there is too much activity with both the roselines and filament barbs but its a fun tank to watch and no skittish behavior like when I had the school of silver dollars in there. I see the growth of the gourami but am just being impatient wanting it to reach adult size. So far it has been very calm and easy going with no aggression issues, finger crossed.

Wow! That RTGG is gorgeous! I hope I never see one that nice for sale, 'cuz I'll probably do something stupid...:)

I've only had one GG, a standard grey one, had it for years and it was just about the perfect large community fish. It never started a fight with anything except others of its species (which it absolutely would not tolerate), it never got picked on by other species, and it could be kept with even the smallest of fish without paying them any attention whatsoever. I know they aren't all that way; I hope yours grows into a calm one, as it will make a spectacular centerpiece for that tank with all its smaller tankmates.

Personally, if that were my fish and anything else caused that guy any stress or raised a ruckus, I'd throw the troublemaker out immediately. :) Let's face it: a Gold Sev is just another dime-a-dozen cichlid...

Is it males or females that are more calm or totally random when a single fish ?

My experience is limited to a sample size of one, so meaningless. Mine proved to be a male and was a complete pussycat right from day one when he was 1.5 inches until he was rehomed during a move several years later at 1.5 feet.

For what it's worth, mine was never alone, was raised with tankmates at all times.
