Betta. She was a center piece at a wedding. I snuck her out and bought her a 5 gallon tank the next day. A few weeks later, the tankmates came...a pair of mollies that one of which gave birth in the bag on the way home. Then came a bigger tank for all the mollies and it progressed from there...

My first fish was probably your typical goldfish. I can't really remember much, but I am sure I started off with a goldfish when I was 7 years old and now I am 35 years old.
My first fish was an Electric Blue Jack Dempsey. Knew nothing about pH, weekly water changes or the other things appropriate for this fish. Damn, he was a hardy fish. Gave him away at about 10". Didn't know he was an Electric Blue, don't think the LFS did either. I was about 10 y/o.
i had a 20L in my bedroom that had a jd, a con, a jewel, and some sort of eel. Way over stocked. I was like 10. 27 now.
My first fish were two feeder goldfish I won at a Girl Scout fair by tossing ping pong balls into a cup. You can't even call it an impulse buy, since they were a prize. My parents were very cool about setting me up with a starter tank, but in retrospect that was horribly irresponsible on the part of the Scouts.
