what would u rather prefer having? fresh/salt water aquarium.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
personally, I just find that my favorite fish are mostly FW (with the exception of morays). Also, the cost of fish themselves isn't the issue, but I find the supplementary stuff like the salt or SW itself and equipment to be pricy in the longterm, and I'm not wealthy by any means. However, if I could afford it, I would get back into SW, but not so much for corals and things like that, just for the morays and more oddball-ish fish

Victorians don't live in salt water.....Fresh is it for me!

SW! i go snorkeling and have cought fish that would be $80 in any retail store. my blennies have just as much personality as oscars minus eating anything that enters the tank. my morays are just as impressive as any pirhana, my french angel fish is WAY more stunning and graceful than any aro. SW is WAY more rewarding. have you ever watched a coral you bought doulbe in size , then split into two , and then trade that frag for another beautiful coral? have you ever felt the excitment of watching the first coral you ever fragged begin to heal, then eat , then get sold for good $$$
you cant cut as fish in half and sell it for the aquarium trade. SW is where its AT!
i dont mind extra work , tests , chemicals , tragedies , expenses , reef aquariums make me want to save our beautiful coral reefs we're destroying.

You're the one catching fish from the reefs!

LOL exactly

the coral reefs are in bad enough shape as it is we dont need saltwater noobs taking them all and then having an accident and killing them

as you can geuss its freshwater tanks for me :headbang2

i love my fw (silver aro's, fire eel, bgk, loaches and catfish are my favs) but the reasons people are stating (except for expense) for not likeing salt are untrue myths for the most part

1. saltwater tanks are not harder to keep than fw, if anything it is a much more natural system (live rock) and it takes care of itself easier in my experiences (especially with a skimmer and ro water)
2. you can only keep monsters in fw? just because you haven't researched them doesn't mean there aren't sw monsters...big triggers, lions, puffers, eels, groupers, even catfish... and those are just common ones...and anyone who says sw fish have no personality havent kept a big puffer they're awesome

saltwater gets a bad rep because people have never tried it and half of those that do treat it with no patience (don't buy live rock, throw in a ton of fish into an uncycled tank) obviously everything crashes and they tell everyone that sw is soooo hard. it really isn't. buy quality live rock, keep a lot of flow, get a good skimmer...yes it can really be close to that simple, just test a few extra things

Freshwater, I have kept both or multiple tanks of one another over the years but I am pretty certain im sticking to freshwater for now.

x2...really don't knock it until you tried it properly.
I was put off for years by all these myths as well. It's really stupid that these rumors get started in the first place, because they stop a lot of people from setting up one. I think due to the lack of knowledge of SW, people vote for fresh consistently. This is due to the fact that when they think of caring for FW they think of fish only, where as in saltwater their mind goes immediately to that and corals, and therefore sense increased difficulty. However, just like freshwater you can do fish only setups in SW, or you can do it with corals, which isn't far from doing fresh w/planted. With that said, both systems can be equally challenging, or unchallenging,it just depends on how much or how little you get into it. For example, freshwater planted tanks can actually take more work than SW w corals (due to CO2, lighting, and dosing requirements). This is because just like corals some are for beginners and some require advanced care. As far as the expense side is concerned, for both the setup and stocking of, you can save a ton by knowing where to look. If there is a reefclub near you, take full advantage of it, and you will find that the expense of salt is not nearly close to what you thought.

What do I prefer? I keep both, as there are SW fish that can easily match the personalities of FW ones...not to mention their colors.

Everyone who says that FW is easier to maintain than SW is retarded. I keep both, I have a nano reef as well as many, many fresh tanks. My bass tank is 9189287937209 times harder to maintain than my reef. All I do to my reef is clean out the skimmer, top off the water, and add Kalkwasser solution every now and then. Yes my reef is insanely awesome, but nothing can beat the attitude of a Dovii :)
